Valérie Jacobs Memoriam

Valérie Jacobs
Valérie Claire Marie Jacobs July 27th 1931 - March 7th 2024
Passed peacefully in her home in the Bayview district of San Francisco. Born to Hosanna "Rougée" Olivier and Richard Jacobs in Chicago, Illinois. A prolific and dedicated artist for over 60 years, she graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1956, then married Eduardo Ferrer. Together they had 3 children, whom she raised in Chicago and ultimately the Noe Valley district of San Francisco. Valérie enjoyed teaching art, especially to children, and attained her MA from SFSU in 1975.
Valérie met Kevyn Lutton in 1985 and together they formed a lifelong partnership in both life and art. In over 60 years as a working artist, Valérie had exhibitions in multiple cities across the US. Her work was shown in galleries such as the M.H. de Young, SOMArts Gallery, Verba Beuna Center and the Bert Green Fine Art in LA.
She was a political activist with a deep love for rescue animals, especially seniors.
Valérie is survived by her partner Kevyn, her three children, Catherine, David and Michael, her grandchildren Dennis and Kyle.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to muttville.org.
Viewing will be March 20, 12:30-1pm, Noble Chapel of the Cypress Lawn Cemetery, 1363 El Camino Real, Colma, CA 94014.

I've been Valérie's next door neighbor for 6+ years now. Valérie would sometimes dog-sit my pup or foster pups or she would sit out in the garden and visit with my pups and give them treats. A huge dog lover all the way through. Such a strong willed woman, I can only imagine what a force of nature she was in her younger years. Godspeed.

Dear Mom,
I want you to know how grateful I am for everything you did for me as a child and growing up into an adult. How you exposed me to music, art, great stories, and movies. How you taught me to play records when I was five. How you indulged my elaborate fantasy games - first with the Christmas crèche, then Barbie dolls, horses - and whatnot. I´ve never lost the ability to create fantasy worlds, something I deeply value even though I never managed to turn that ability into art or literature.

You took me everywhere, from the Museum of Natural History to Art Institute exhibits, where I still vividly remember watching live chicks hatch and being amazed by avant-garde 1960s art installations. And also outdoors: to see the deer in Chicago´s Lincoln Park after school, on a nighttime walk through the snow when the "Great Snow of 67" started, and later our lovely car trips along the coast or to Bodega Bay when we lived in San Francisco.

Thank you for reading Greek mythology to me instead of just fairy tales. And for getting me the real Born Free books, not just seeing the movie. And for taking me to the library from a very early age, which turned into a serious habit later on. And of course going to films together like The Wild Child and other art house films. Now I use the internet to indulge these interests and listen to music, but the enjoyment and curiosity remain the same.

You gave me so much to take with me for the rest of my life, and it´s all still here in one form or another.

Thank you.
Your loving and grateful daughter,
Catherine
