Victor Marcus Obituary

Victor L. Marcus Born April 23, 1915 in Berlin and a resident of San Francisco for over 70 years, he died peacefully on Thursday, June 18, 2009 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Annelies in 1964 and by his second wife, Charlotte in 1994. He is survived by his nephews Kenneth, Walter, and Ralph Marcus of Cape Town, South Africa; his stepdaughter Eliane Reinhold of New York; and his devoted friend Mary Powell of San Francisco. His family operated a successful marzipan business in Germany; when Victor immigrated to the United States in 1936, he entered the almond industry. In 1950, he joined the real estate firm of Milton Meyer and Company (now the Shorenstein Company) and eventually became its executive Vice President. In 1970, he established the Victor L. Marcus Company, one of the most highly respected independent industrial real estate brokerage firms in Northern California. Victor served on the boards of numerous professional, charitable, and civic organizations. He was a founding trustee of the Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning at USF, and was honored in 1991 by the Jewish Museum after serving as a trustee for many years. He was a board member and past President of the Society of Industrial Realtors of Northern California, as well as a member of the International Real Estate Federation and the Counselors of Real Estate. He served as a member of the Boards of Directors of the Downtown Association, the Jewish Community Federation, the Technion Society and the Concordia Argonaut Club. Victor joined the board of the Jewish Home of San Francisco in 1967, serving as its President from 1975-77. His priority was the needs of the elderly and, in particular, to the development of opportunities for the benefit of his extended family at the Jewish Home. His support and continuing guidance enabled the Home to become a recognized center for clinical care, learning and research of the elderly in the local and national arenas. A long time patron of the San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Symphony, he made available to the residents of the Home the opportunities to attend Opera and Symphony performances for many, many years. Victor's respect and appreciation for the dignity and potential of each individual has been the hallmark of his service to the elderly and is his legacy to the larger community. Services were held this past week in San Francisco. If you wish , contributions may be made to the Marcus Music Fund at the Jewish Home, 302 Silver Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94112 or to the charity of your choice.

Having known Lupy since 1933 and having been common playmates since that time and reading about his success over the years in this country, I will miss him dearly. San Francisco will never be the same without Lupy.

This message is especially for Mary but also for all of Victor's family.

Victor was a remarkable person. He gave greatly to the community and was always a joy to be with. He was a man of integrity, caring and optimism.

Mary, you were dedicated to his well being. You must have comfort in that even as you sorrow. I am thinking of you so very much at this time.

My family joins me in understanding sympathy. If we can help in any way , we are here for you.

With affection,

Carolene

In my case, the memories are far too many and it would be difficult to choose just one or two. He used to say he knew me when I was just a glimmer in my mother's eye. And he always had a real twinkle in his. He had one foot in the last century and one in the next. Someone described his being like a cactus, a little prickly on the outside, but so sweet in the center. He was a wonderful man and we will all miss him greatly.

A true "gentle man" passes. I will miss our conversations at lunch about music, Paris and living a meaningful life.
God bless Victor.
