Violet Ginsburg Memoriam

Violet A. Ginsburg February 14, 1919 - March 30, 2006 Passed away peacefully on March 30, 2006, at the age of 87. A beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Violet is also remembered as an accomplished artist, community leader, and advocate for disabled people and the arts. She was born in Fresno, received her art degree from UC Berkeley, and became a fashion artist in New York. She left her greatest mark when she returned to Visalia, where she and her husband, the Honorable Leonard M. Ginsburg (dec. 1988), raised their four children and where Violet was a leader in the League of Women Voters, the AAUW, the Tulare County Symphony League, and many other community organizations. Her devotion to raising a child with disabilities inspired her to pursue a master's in rehabilitation from CSU Fresno in 1977 and to found the Creative Center in Visalia, a nationally renowned center to teach, encourage and showcase artist expression of all kinds for disabled adults. In later years, Violet and Leonard moved to the Bay Area, where she made new friends and flourished as an artist. She is survived by her children, Leonard, Bill, Jon (dec. 1987) and Betty; her daughters-in-law Emma and Gerri; by her grandchildren, Jacob, Leah, Michael, Sarah, Marco, Zena and Molly; and by many friends and family who will miss her warmth and wit. A service will be held Saturday, April 1, at 3 p.m. at the Sequoias, 1400 Geary Blvd., SF. Donations in Violet's memory may be made to the Creative Center, PO Box 943, Visalia, CA 93279.
