Virginia Field Obituary

Virginia Field
10/28/1936 - 03/31/2025
Virginia "Gina" Field passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday, March 31, 2025, at her home in Westwood, California. She inspired us with her strength, positivity and stoicism during her private and valiant battle with cancer.
An accomplished bridge player and life-long gardener, Gina was active in her community, brightening the lives of others with her kindness, compassion and love of color. While the family wine business took her to vineyards near and far, she was also an avid supporter of the local arts and theater scene and visited gardens wherever she found herself. Frequently spotted with "The Sporting Green" in hand, Gina was a devoted fan of the Niners, Giants, and Warriors.
Born on October 28, 1936, Gina was raised in Chicago until age 16, when her family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma. She attended Will Rogers High School, a big change from her previous all-girl Catholic school in Chicago. Gina was naturally social and participated in multiple school and community service activities. Volunteering at a local florist was so successful she received an offer for a paying job, but most importantly, it helped spark her lifelong passion for flowers.
Gina graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in sociology. Active on campus, she was a dorm resident advisor and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, serving as president her senior year. She remained close to many of her college friends her entire life.
The early 60's led Gina to San Francisco, where she met the love of her life, James Arthur Field, while both worked at BBDO. After eloping on Friday, September 13, 1963, they bought a home in Orinda. The ranch they painted bright red, and the surrounding garden oasis was where they raised two daughters and lived for nearly 60 years. Gina served as Conservation Chair and President of the Orinda chapter of Garden Club of America. She also worked at Williams & Sonoma and partnered with Jim in the family wine business, James Arthur Field Wine.
After losing Jim at age 98, Gina moved from Orinda to Westwood in late 2022 to be closer to family. She called the Watermark at Westwood Village her new home, arranging flowers for the community's dining room, frequenting the Geffen Theater and continuing to play bridge with special new friends.
Gina is survived by her brother Dick (Ann), daughters Allison (Andrew) and Bailey (Robert), three granddaughters (Caz, Gaby, and Shira), along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her husband, Jim, and brother Mark (Carol).
Gina would think it was just 'grand' if we all took a moment to enjoy our local gardens, or played a competitive hand of bridge (especially with a little dark chocolate, chocolate chip cookie or sip of CocaCola). And don't forget to enjoy that special glass of wine.
In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the Garden Club of America conservation initiatives or UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation.

Jim and Gina have been such cherished friends of the Farrow family.

Please share any memory or specific story you have of Gina. Her family, especially her granddaughters would love to hear them.
Mom woke each morning, ended each dinner, and went to sleep each night with a cup of tea. I sip my tea holding Mom in my heart.
