Walter Newman Obituary

Walter Newman
April 3, 1952 - July 22, 2023
Dr. Walt Newman passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 22, 2023 in San Jose, California. Walt was 71. He is survived by his mother, Ellen Magnin Newman and his brother, John D. Newman.
Walt's family is coordinating a celebration of his life to be held later this Summer. If you would like to be kept informed about this celebration, please reply to this post, or please email [email protected]
Walt was a 4th generation Californian with ancestral ties to the town of Newman, CA. The town was founded in 1888. Walt was dedicated to his family and its long history. He maintained an extensive Newman Family Tree and organized Newman family members annually to return to the town over Labor Day holidays to participate in The Newman Fall Festival.
Walt was born and raised in San Francisco where he attended Town School for Boys before heading to the East Coast to attend Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire. Walt received his undergraduate degree With Honors from Stanford, and then his medical degree from UCSF Medical School. Walt excelled academically. He received achievement awards at all levels of his studies.
Following his graduation from Medical School, Walt wanted to apply his training as "a country doctor" in a personalized and caring manner. To do so, in 1980 Walt moved from San Francisco to the then emerging community of San Jose prior to the evolution of the Silicon Valley as we know it today. He started his medical career as a family doctor taking care of the needs of entire families from the beginning, to the end of life, and providing care in his genuine, compassionate and insightful manner. Walt was an amazing listener to the needs of his patients from diverse communities. To better serve them, he committed to learn the languages of his patients. Accordingly, Walt was fluent in French, Italian, and Spanish, and conversational with his patients in Tagalog, Farsi and Vietnamese.
Later in his career, Walt developed a specialization in Occupational Medicine to help address the medical needs of agricultural workers. For years, Walt served as Medical Director of Monterey Mushrooms overseeing the general medical needs of thousands of agricultural workers. He also served as a Consulting Medical Director to the Robert F. Kennedy Medical Plan which provided health care insurance for the United Farm Workers, a large agricultural labor union organized by the late Cesar Chavez.
In addition to his private medical practice at Newman Medical Group, Walt taught at Stanford and UCSF in the Department of Medicine. He was devoted to mentoring and inspiring medical students to support providing medical care to undeserved communities. Walt organized medical student volunteers known as "flu crews" to go out to undeserved communities throughout Northern California to provide free flu vaccinations. During the recent pandemic, the mission of these volunteer crews was expanded to include COVID-19 vaccinations. Walt's dedication and compassion for others led to Walt being the first recipient of The Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award from The Western Occupational & Environmental Medical Association ("WOEMA"). Walt also served as President and a member of the Board of WOEMA for many years.
When Walt had free time from his medical practice, his first love was the theater arts. For decades, he organized trips of interested family and friends to make trips to Ashland, Oregon for a wide range of theater performances; however, his most passionate theater interest was locally in San Jose with The Children's Musical Theater of San Jose (CMTSJ). Walt served on the advisory board of CMTSJ for many years, and he was a regular attendee at CMTSJ performances. He was particularly moved by the CMTSJ mission that young performers would be placed in a show regardless of experience, or any physical or financial limitations. Simply put, CMTSJ would cast all performers that wished to participate. This worthy mission helped to build confidence and self-esteem in young performers.
Walt provided medical care for every member of his immediate Newman Family and countless relatives and friends who called upon him for consultation and referral on a range of medical issues. Walt prided himself on being available to intervene whenever family and friends could benefit from his knowledge and hands-on experience. He did so often and without any expectation of return.
Walt was a truly brilliant doctor, and a loving and compassionate man.
Walt often quoted lines from theater performances. One of his favorites was from Act III of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night….
"I can no other answer make, …. but thanks, and thanks….and ever thanks…"
For those of us who had the privilege of knowing Walt in any way …. we give no other answer make, …. but thanks….and thanks and ever thanks.
Walt lived a beautiful life. We will bless his memory by carrying his spirit in our hearts and minds forever.
Rest in heavenly peace Walt.

A soldier to the end. He said I will never give up on you when I was struggling with difficult condition. It wasnt that he cured me but he inspires me to not give up. He worked to the end.

Was very saddened to hear about the passing of cousin Walt. We were related to his relatives through my great-grandfather, Max Strauss and his wife, Bertha (Cohen) Strauss. We attended the Newman festival with him several times, and also enjoyed seeing him at CMTSJ while my daughter was a performer there. He was so accomplished, had an amazing spirit, and put serving others above all else. Walt was truly one of a kind, and he will be missed!

I am deeply saddened to learn of Dr Newman's passing. I am forever indebted and grateful for his correct diagnosis and prompt plan of action for a condition that could have shaved several years of my life and likely would have destroyed my career as well. Dr Newman was an outstanding individual, both as a physician, scholar, teacher, as well as a philanthropist. My heart goes out to his family.

I just wanted to send a message to Dr. Newman and I found this obituary. This makes me so sad. In 1984 Dr. Newman and a surgeon saved my life when I was about to die and I am so grateful I'm still here. Thank you, Dr. Newman, and rest in peace.

I fondly remember working for Dr Newman in the 80´s, at his office next to Santa Teresa Hospital.
He loved taking his staff out to lunch, as well as making a yearly trek to cut down a Christmas tree for the office. We would then come back to the office and have a decorating party.
Such cherished memories.....
Dr Newman, you were the very best!

Dr. Walter Newman helped me to be the caring doctor I'm today. He taught me to learn my patients' social history as that is where the visit starts and ends. He was kind and humble and mentored me since I was in college! That was over 10 years ago! He was a great human being! His Vietnamese accent was great! Chao Back Si Walt! Thank you for being a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend!

Walt you will be missed so much. We were neighbors for years. When our children were young he was always there to help. He was much more than a neighbor. The way he persevered over the last few years after the accident made him an example to all. We just heard of his passing and wish all our love to his family.

DR Newman was a very special man, he was caring, listened and respected. I met Dr Newman when I was 28 years old and that was 41 years ago. I have a special needs brother and he took such good care of him, but his staff (Chelsey) was just as special. My deepest condolences to his family and staff, he will be greatly missed by many. Rest in Peace Dr Newman, the world lost one of the best.

I was a classmate of Walter´s in high school, medical school, and we both served on the Stanford Faculty. He was truly a renaissance man, skilled in the art and science of medicine, fluent in many languages, a Shakespeare scholar, and most of all a humanitarian who put patients, family, friends, and his community first. Among his projects, he founded Stanford´s Flu Crew (and came up with the name!) which has administered more than 100,000 vaccines in the Bay Area over the last 20 years. He set a shining example for our healthcare students. May the memory of his good deeds serve as a blessing to all of us.

Dr Walt 'NuNu' Newman is an inspiration and role model to us all. He saved my wife´s life. And he elevated mine.
Dr Walt reunited me with a legendary part of my family that I had only heard of during my childhood, through his love of genealogy. And he embraced me as a relative, a friend and respected my career as an actor. He hosted us countless times at shows at SJCMT and delightful dinners, filled with his passion for life and the arts. We celebrated his family by riding in the Newman Founders Day Parade (One year playing the founders themselves.). We celebrated holidays in Ellen & Walt Sr home, always ending with the family singing a rousing round of 'Consider Yourself One of the Family'.
He attended annually for ten years a children´s holiday show I was in, bringing his beloveds to share the magic.
He called me 'wise guy', 'porcupine' and 'knucklehead' in his best Moe Howard impression, because I play from time to time Larry Fine in a Three Stooges tribute. Walt loved the Stooges.
I´m honored to be one of the family and a friend.
May cousin Walt continue being an inspiration to those that he touched with his generous spirit, and others that didn't know him, through these remembrances from us, the lucky ones that did. .

I am just today hearing of this sad news. Dr. Newman was my doctor since 1982. He would always tell the staff that I was one of his first patients. Dr. Newman came to my rescue many times over the years. He graciously became my husband´s physician when he needed a doctor. We are both feeling the loss of a great man and an accomplished physician. Please contact us with information on his celebration of life.

I remembered the day I met Dr. Newman was the day I had a mini stroke. I walked in his office gasping for help and was not sure if I come to the right place. I did come to the right place because Dr. Newman was there and he saved me from the stroke. He is a very unique individual and a great doctor. He is attentive, kind and thorough in his work. I know that I am in a good hand. I still remembered his greeting to me in French when I came in for visit. I will miss that. Allez! Bonne voyage Docteur Newman. On se reverra un jour au paradis.

Walt was one of my dearest mentors in medical school and has had a significantly influential impact on who I will be as a future physician and as a person. His endless kindness and encouragement, fierce social advocacy, and dedication to fighting for what he believed in are such formidable qualities. He was so loved by his patients, colleagues, and certainly his mentees. Being part of the legacy of Stanford Flu Crew has done nothing short of shaping my life significantly. His example and the traits he modeled as a physician are values I carry closely with me in my training and in my patient care. I am so grateful and honored by the opportunity to have been mentored by and to have been close with a legend like Walt. I can only hope to be able to honor your legacy and carry your memory forward through my work and my life. Thank you for all that you taught and gave to me and so many others.
