Please see my posting dated 2012 below which really tells the story of my friendship with Walt. George was there the day of the memorial. I wonder if George is still 'with us'. He was a dear friend.

My sister, Gwen Powell Podesta, and I have fond memories of Walt. He was one of the Excelsior 'kids' who 'hung out' at
my dad's store at Brazil and Madrid. He and brother George and many of the other boys became known as the Lew Powell tigers. My sister and I always thought that handsome Walt resembled movie star Alan Ladd!. If you have a copy of the late WaLT Jebe's "Excelsior District" book, in the section which I co-authored,
see Page 101--and there you will see a photo which I posted taken on December 7, 1941,in front of my dad's store, the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and changed our lives forever. Walt is on
the far right, and the other 'kids' are
Johnny Olsen,Joe Bricker, Jim Mc
Carthy, and Ed Phillips. (No doubt
George Woodall was there, too). After the attack on that day, loads of newspapers were dropped off at the store, and these "Tigers" went out selling them door to door.
My condolences to all of Walt's family.

Mary Ann, Sue and Family,
I was so sorry to hear that your dad died, he will be greatly missed.
Please know that you and your Dad are in my thoughts and prayers.
I have so many great memories of your Dad; he was one of those very special people that everyone adored. I used to love going to the local Art and Wine Festivals and seeing him behind the Lyons Club booth cooking away and always smiling and conversing with everyone. He had that gift that just made you feel so special when he spoke with you.
Your Dad & Mom were of great support to me when I so desperately needed it. Please know I am here for all of you if and when you need it.
With love and sympathy,
