Warren Hyde Chick
Warren Hyde Chick, a kind and gentle man, peacefully passed from this world to the next at home the afternoon of Sunday, September 16, 2018 surrounded by the love of his life, Paula A. Mulhall, and his faithful German Shepherd dogs, Rosie and Bamboo.
Admired and respected by all who knew him, Warren will be missed for his understated brilliance, cryptic humor, old school values, decency, integrity and unwavering commitment to his friends and family. A true Renaissance man, Warren excelled at every career he chose from joining the family business of orthopedic equipment manufacturing, to a Berkeley Policeman, a Boalt Hall graduate lawyer, a respected Builder of fine homes and Real Estate Investor and eventually - after retiring early from the construction industry - to spending his time inventing ingenious products for his own delight. Throughout his career he was active in charitable causes, serving on nonprofit boards. Warren was a passionate member of the Bohemian Club for 13 years beginning in 2005. He camped at Ladera. His father was a founding member of the Bohemian Club's Aviary Camp.
Genuine to the core, Warren's quiet strength sometimes mystified those that didn't know him well although everyone enjoyed his company immensely. His friends have said "still waters run deep" in describing his circumspect, deliberate nature, however, his early days were quite different! He was the first to jump off a cliff into a roaring river in the Sierras with his good friend and Zeta Psi Fraternity brother, Peter Hall, or speed down Claremont Avenue on his motorcycle, or tackle a oncoming football player without fear. Warren was as normal as the next guy but what set him apart was his innate ability to "champion others", to make you feel like you were the most important person in the room. It was never about him; the conversation was always about you. His unselfish nature came naturally; he was able to effortlessly blend into any situation.
He was an active adventurer, traveling to Canada's Yukon Territory and to the cities of Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska multiple times. An avid outdoorsman, Warren was introduced to duck clubs and fly fishing by his father. An experienced camper, Warren was the best-equipped companion one could wish for and the ideal person with whom to take long road trips - one of his favorite pastimes. He was fascinated by nature and loved all animals, birds, the constellations, rivers, mountains, State Parks, and of course, his many German Shepherd dogs over the years. A voracious reader, Warren could surprisingly discuss far-ranging subjects from physics to 1800's sailing ships.
Born January 24, 1945 and raised in Berkeley, California, he attended Berkeley High School, UC Berkeley where he was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity, and received his law degree from UC Berkeley, Boalt Hall. Warren is preceded in death by his devoted and loving parents, Gilbert Hyde Chick and Roma Rivolta Chick and brother, Gilbert Hyde Chick.
He was loved, cherished and survived by many special friends and relatives: Peter Hall, James Cowan, Kip Solinsky, Jerry Herrick, Ron Wolfman, Roger Gash, Steve Kalthoff, Daphne Chick, Richard Chick, Barbara Chick, Geoffrey Chick, Peter H. Chick, Carolita "Kit" Chick Phillips, Karla Thierolf Massie, Richard Theirolf, David Clarke, Janet Clarke, Nancy Clarke Hoy, Timothy Koopmann, Gayle Koopmann McLelland, Michael Antonini, and Carolyn Antonini Cardinalli, among others.
A private celebration of Warren's life will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019, beginning at 1 pm. at our home in the Oakland Hills. Warren's life was tragically cut short by Parkinson's Disease and unrelated cognitive issues. He will be forever missed. Please contact Paula A. Mulhall at
