William Meyer Obituary

William "Spot" Meyer
May 10, 1935 - August 3, 2023
William (Spot) Meyer born May 10, 1935 passed away peacefully on August 3, 2023. Bill had been surrounded by his loving friends who cherished his companionship.
Growing up in San Mateo amongst family and friends, he attended St. Matthew Catholic Elementary School and Junipero Serra High School where he made lifelong friends. He continued to support the Serra Padres through financial support and cheering them on at games during football and basketball season. He had many well-told stories about his time at Serra and the many priests who helped him develop into a high school athlete and scholar.
After serving in the US Army, he returned to the Bay Area to attend University of San Francisco both for his BA, teaching credential and MA degrees. Teaching and counseling students along with coaching both boys and girls basketball was the love of his life. He manifested that love at Santa Clara High School where he joined the staff in 1963 and retired in June, 2000. Generations of students loved his economics and history classes due to his tight lectures, sarcastic humor and genuine concern for each student. This mixture of expertise, humor and genuine kindness brought him deep relationships with students and staff alike. Always an avid competitor, winning the 1983 Central Coast Section Basketball Championships was one of his proudest moments among many great accomplishments. Some of his favorite memories and people shared his love of Santa Clara High School, Serra High School, San Mateo, San Francisco, The Eagles, golf, sports and enjoying a great meal or a scoop of ice cream in the sunshine. Bill, or as he is known in San Mateo county, Spot, will be sorely missed by the many friends he chose as family.
A casual gathering will be held on Sunday, October 22nd. For more information on the gathering and to RSVP, please contact Tabitha Kappeler-Hurley at [email protected] or (408) 396-7952 All those who wish to come and share a fun memory are welcome to join in this celebration of Bill/Spot Meyer - a life well-lived and well loved.

Bill was the greatest. I was fortunate enough to know him as both a student and coworker. His sense of humor kept everyone on their toes. When I first came back to SC as a VP after working at Wilcox. Bill came into my office and gave me the best advice, " Remember, your IQ didn't increase with your pay raise."
In that job, watching him work with students not always on the right side of the school rules, was where I was able to see his love for his students and pride in Santa Clara High. He is one of the many role models I had in SCUSD.

It was the fall of 98'. Mr. Meyer saw that I had a lot on my plate and made a learning path that alleviated much of that nonsense. He did warn me that courses needed to be made up. But in those courses I met some amazing people and got to spend more time with my bestfriend who would be graduating in spring. Mr. Meyer did his job well and had a glow about him. Thank you for making that path brighter that year, and fostering my own spark.

I´m still numb. Miss talking with Bill several times a day, every day. Such a void in my life. His friendship will be deeply missed. Here he is with one of his many favorite students. She said Bill was the reason she was the first in her family to go to college. A real success story. She was one of the many reasons Bill and I bonded. Rest easy, Bill.

Bill's class at Santa Clara High School (1967-68) was the only thing that got me through. I absolutely adored him! We were instructed to stand and sing 'Edelweiss' when ever an Administrator came into the room. I will never forget him or his class. RIP Bill!
