William Porter Obituary

William R. Porter

August 1, 1917 - April 10, 2018

William Ray Porter, at the age of 100, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 10, 2018.

Bill was born in 1917 in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He graduated from Gilroy High School in 1935. He graduated from San Jose State University after World War II in 1947 in accounting, having gone into military service in June 1943 and returning in 1946. He served in combat with the Merchant Marine delivering ammunition throughout the South Pacific during the war.

On his return, he continued his lifelong accounting career with the State of California, Board of Equalization Business Tax Agency, concluding after 45 years as Head of the San Francisco District encompassing 1 of 5 districts of the state.

He is predeceased by his lifelong love, Madoline Porter, his bride of 65 years. He is survived by his brother, Albert Porter, his step-son Russell L. Moore, Jr., daughter-in-law Katherine R. Moore, and his two grandsons Judge Russell L. Moore, III and Sean Moore, M.D.

In his many years of successful retirement, he participated in multiple charitable endeavors, too many to name, as he also did before his retirement.

He was a special person and friend to everyone who knew him. He was always supportive, kind, generous, intelligent, dependable, humorous and loving. He was quite simply "the greatest".

A private family memorial service was held Sunday, April 15, 2018.
