Winifred Noble Obituary

Winifred Brady Noble
09/09/1935 - 08/03/2025
Winifred Brady Noble, a fourth-generation Californian, died peacefully at home on August 3, 2025. Her family history traces back to early America. A subsequent generation journeyed westward in covered wagons, eventually settling in Grass Valley. Her great grandparents Edward and Adelia McLaughlin moved from Grass Valley to San Jose where he became a prominent banker, founding several banks including the San Jose Safety Deposit Bank which merged with The Bank of Italy (now B of A) becoming its first branch. Her grandparents, Winifred and William Leet, built a renowned home on The Alameda, designed by architect Willis Polk with gardens by John McLaren.
Born in San Francisco, Mrs. Noble was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Lowell High School, and the Hamlin School. She went on to graduate from the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi. In 1962, she married Dr. Walter Morris Hart Noble, a San Francisco internist whose own pioneer roots also traced to Grass Valley. Together they shared 37 years of marriage until his passing in 2000.
Deeply engaged in civic and cultural life, Mrs. Noble was a member of the Junior League and served as President of the Parents Association at the Town School for Boys. She was a longtime director of the San Francisco Waltz Society, and her grace as a ballroom dancer made her a sought-after partner at countless social events. Known for her warmth, hospitality, and sparkling sense of humor, she brought joy to gatherings and friendships alike.
Creativity was one of her hallmarks. She especially enjoyed decorating her home in Sonoma, delighting in the discovery of antiques and secondhand treasures with which she created an environment that was at once eclectic, welcoming, and elegant.
Mrs. Noble was also a member and former director of the Town and Country Club and a proud member of the Society of California Pioneers.
She is survived by her sons, Morris Hart Noble, Jr., of San Francisco and William Leet Noble (Danice) of San Francisco, as well as four grandchildren: Caroline, Sally, Charlotte and William, Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walter Morris Hart Noble, and by her first son, Christopher Coleman Noble, who died in childhood.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Noble Family Endowed Chair at the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation or to a favorite charity.
