Chester Gray Obituary

August 29th,1929 - March 6th, 2022 Chester "Chet" Monroe Gray Jr., Veteran and Southern California heavy equipment operator, died quietly on March 6th, 2022, at his home in West Covina, California. He was surrounded by his family who were celebrating his wife Editha's 93rd birthday. Chet is survived by his wife Editha; his sons Chet, Jim and Jerald; and his grandchildren Ashley, Jackson, Josh and Josette; and great grandson Riley. Chet was born August 20th, 1929, in Los Angeles, California to Elizabeth and Chester M. Gray Sr. Chet was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Pasadena Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the Union of Operating Engineers, Local 12 for over 45 years and worked on heavy equipment throughout Southern California. Furthermore, Chet was a retired Board Member of the San Gabriel Valley Boy Scouts of America and served as Commissioner of Boy Scouts for the El Centro District. On October 24th, 1954, Chet married Editha and would remain devoted to his beloved "Schotts" for over 67 years. In the early 1950's, Chet achieved Master Sargent status in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Germany after WW2. While in Germany he would meet his future wife, Editha Geerdts. Later, he would teach Navigation, Astronomy and Labor Law for the adult night-school program while operating heavy equipment during the day. In addition, he was involved in the establishment of the Operating Engineers Apprentice program for Southern California. Chet was a selfless man who generously gave of his time and knowledge to anyone he met. His family and friends knew he was always available to anyone who needed assistance. His boys, Chet, Jim, Jerald and Bill considered themselves blessed to have him as their "Dad". He will be deeply missed and may he rest in peace with his son Bill.
