Dhein, Clyde Joseph
Clyde Joseph Dhein, age 88, of Sheboygan, WI, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016. He was born on April 26, 1928 in Milwaukee, WI, son of Helen Maas and Al Dhein. He spent the first eight years of his life with the Henry Clanderman family in Plymouth with his daughter Gertie and her children, Tootie and Earl and returned in 1936 to live with his mother, Helen Maas. He was a graduate of Holy Name grade school - class of 1942 and went on to attend Central High School graduating in 1946. Upon entering the Air Force in June 1946 he served his country for three years, the last 10 months taking place in Wiesbadn, Germany at the headquarters of the Berlin Air Lift where he shook hands with Charles Lindburgh and Jim Doolittle. For nine months, life was hectic with 16 hour days and frequent courier trips to Berlin and meeting exciting visitors at headquarters. Then upon discharge he attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison for one and a half years when in 1949 he came home and met Delores Pick, shortly after this, he was recalled back to military service at the start of the Korean War in 1950. Whereupon, he served for an additional year and then was discharged with the rank of Sergeant. He continued service in the reserves through 1953. While on his second hitch, he married Delores Pick in Hernando, Mississippi on March 9, 1951. Upon completion of military service, he worked a year and a half at Honold and La Page Wholesalers before embarking on his life's work at Thomas Industries in 1953 and finishing as Chief Accountant before retiring in July of 1990 after 37 years of service. Among his duties as Cost Accountant and Payroll Supervisor, he handed out the checks to all office personnel. Before starting out on his rounds, he used to blow a whistle to announce his coming and got lots of smiles in return.
Clyde was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was a long time member of the Sierra Club and Wilderness Society as well as a supportive member of the Maywood Nature Reserve. He also enjoyed playing Bridge, Sheepshead and Cribbage on a regular basis with friends and was also a "voracious" reader who frequented the local library. His recall of history, along with dates and events, made him a great history buff. This, along with his long nature walks through Pine Woods and Maywood Reserve, were his true joys. It stands to reason, though, that his wife Delores was his number one joy.
He is survived by his "dearly" beloved wife, Delores "Pick" Dhein, three daughters - Deborah "Dhein" Stieber (Paul) of Gilroy, CA, Denise Dhein of Sheboygan, and Doreen Dhein of Fresno, CA. Further survived by two grandsons, Joel (Trish) and Brandon (Catherine) Stieber of San Jose and Gilroy, respectively, three granddaughters, Claire and Emma Imperial of Fresno and Alexis Crysalis Mackenzie Chau of San Jose and one great-granddaughter Carina Maya Stieber. Also survived by two brothers, Leonard Dhein of Santa Monica, CA and Darryl Dhein of Waterloo, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen "Maas" Nickish and step-father, Otto Nickish. He joins his twin grandchildren, Julia and Timothy Stieber.
