Edward Wegner Obituary

Wegner, Edward (1925-2016)

Edward C. Wegner, age 90, of Plymouth, WI, passed away early Monday evening (May 16, 2016) at the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls, surrounded by his family, holding his hand.

Ed was born on November 27, 1925 in Sheboygan, WI, a son of the late Walter and Viola (Brass) Wegner. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1944.

Ed served in the United States Army Air Force from 1944-1946. He was proud to be a WW II Veteran, a pilot that the Air Force tried to weed out because he was a Wisconsin farm boy that couldn't possibly be a good enough pilot but had learned to fly from a neighbor who had an airplane. Ed flew solo by the time he was 16! He was a bit of a rebel, owning a motorcycle his father didn't know about, hated cleaning the chicken coop, and bought an Auto Body Shop in Plymouth which became Wegner's Auto Body which he ran with his son, Randy, and his wife, Isabel, who served as his secretary until his retirement.

On July 19, 1947 he married Isabel Carolan in Sheboygan, WI. The couple lived in Sheboygan Falls and moved to Plymouth in 1953. They enjoyed 66 wonderful years of marriage. His wife preceded him in death on December 17, 2013.

He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ in Plymouth and served in the Men's Club in the church and was a lifetime member of Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and the Antique Aircraft Association (AAA) and also belonged to the Ladewig-Zinkgraf American Legion Post # 243 in Plymouth.

He was a multiple Grand Champion at the EAA and ran stock cars for the Milwaukee Stock Car Association in Plymouth where he captured several championships.

Ed was inducted into the EAA Hall of Fame in 1999 and flew his airplane just this last year, at 90 years old.

He loved taking the family on summer trips all over the United States. If he wasn't working in his woodshop, he was taking walks and talking to everyone. He achieved so much in his life and was an inspiration to many.

Survivors include: His son: Randy of Plymouth, Two Grandchildren: Lyndsey Wegner of Los Angeles, CA and Robert Wegner of Madison; Two sister-in-law's: Dottie Carolan of Sun Prairie and Jackie Wegner of Kiel; One brother-in-law: Lyle Fries of Cedarburg and is also survived by other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by one daughter: Nadene Wegner, daughter-in-law: Barbara Wegner; One Brother: Frederick "Fritz" Wegner; One brother-in-law: Andrew Carolan and one sister-in-law: Mary Lou Fries.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday evening (June 8, 2016) at 6:30 P.M. at Salem United Church of Christ in Plymouth. Rev. James Hoppert, pastor of the church will officiate.

Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in the Plymouth Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the CHURCH on Wednesday from 3:30 P.M. until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Ed's name.

The Ladewig-Zinkgraf American Legion Post # 243 in Plymouth will conduct military rites at the Church following the services.

Sad to hear of Ed's passing. Met him at the Plymouth Airpark and continued our friendship at the Sheboygan Airport. He even taught me a little Latin when he named one of his restored aircraft "Tempus Fugit", that translates to "Time Flies". My sympathy to the Wegner family.

My sympathy to Ed's family. Celebrate a life well lived!
I grew up in Plymouth and remember Wegner's Auto Body.
I worked at Magnus Aviation/Western Shore Aviation and met Ed there.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and a greater person you could not find...always did the right and proper thing. I loved watching him taxi his Spartan past the FBO...made me smile every time.
God speed Ed, you're flying with the best of them now!

Ed was a true Gentleman in all respects!! Every year at our annual Midwest Airplane Airplane Club event at Brodhed he gave rides in his BEAUTIFUL 1929 Spartan Biplane to anyone who just stood in line waiting their turn, including my wife. Have a safe flight West Ed, Clear Skys and strong tailwinds!! ❤
