Eugene Sattler Obituary

Eugene A. Sattler

Poy Sippi - Eugene Albert Sattler was carried home in the loving arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 11, 2021 at the age of 94.

Eugene was born to Leonard and Ida Sattler on May 7, 1927 at the family farm near Poy Sippi, WI. Eugene enjoyed sharing stories with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren about his life with his parents and siblings on the farm.

Shortly after high school, Eugene felt God was calling him to be a Lutheran school teacher. Once his younger brother was able to take over the responsibilities of the farm, Eugene attended Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, IL. There he met the love of his life, Doris Tews, a farm girl from Connecticut. They were married on June 28, 1952 at Zion Lutheran Church in Southington, CT.

Eugene served the Lord faithfully as a teacher, choir director and organist at Lutheran schools in San Antonio, TX; Napoleon, OH; Sheboygan, WI; and Berlin, WI. Expanding his love for teaching, he served as director of Camp LuWiSoMo in central Wisconsin for seven years. After he retired from full-time ministry as a teacher, he became “Professor Eugene” for several months when he taught English to the students of Handong University in South Korea.

Ever the educator, Eugene established the non-profit ministry Creation Education Association (CEA). Through his lectures, he taught everyone he encountered about God’s creation and the Biblical flood. These lectures saw Eugene and Doris traveling to schools and churches across the nation and even internationally. As part of the ministry of CEA, Eugene also published a quarterly newsletter and hand-crafted scale models of Noah’s Ark.

Like his father, Eugene was an accomplished organist and played the organ for thousands of church services, weddings and funerals for over 70 years beginning and finishing at his home church of Emmaus in Poy Sippi, WI. He also shared his appreciation and love of music with his seven children by teaching them to sing and ensuring they learned to play instruments. Later, he shared this love with his grandchildren by frequently giving them encouragement in their musical endeavors and attending their recitals and concerts.

Whether driving across the prairies, hiking mountains, descending into canyons, camping in the woods, or looking out across the fields near his home, Eugene viewed God’s handiwork with awe and gratitude. He helped instill that same appreciation of nature in his family, his students, and the youth at the camp by planning numerous camping and hiking adventures to interesting places all across the continent.

Eugene was a loving husband and a wonderful father, grandfather and friend. His life was an example to all of Christian service and honor to our Savior and Lord. He was loved dearly and will be deeply missed, but we rejoice in knowing that, like the servant in Matthew 25:23, Eugene heard his Master say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant! …Come and share your master’s happiness!” as he entered into his heavenly home.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Ida Sattler, his sisters, Delores Werner and Eleanor Hanson, his brother Stewart Sattler, and his sons-in-law, Daniel Frater and Michael Henke.

Eugene is survived by his beloved wife, Doris; his sons: Karl (Carol) Sattler, Paul (Deb) Sattler, Philip (Bea) Sattler, and David (Michele) Sattler; his daughters: Martha Frater, Gretchen (Kevin) Greatens, and Kristin Henke; and by 24 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

A service celebrating Eugene’s life will be held at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Poy Sippi, Wisconsin (N4494 Highway 49 & County Road H) at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 18. Visitation will precede the service from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. A light lunch will follow the service. Interment will be at Brushville Cemetery.

I was a student of Mr, Sattler at St Paul´s Lutheran Church. I was just thinking about him and the impact he had on our church and school, and I decided to look him up. Very sad to hear this news if his passing. I still remember him playing that magnificent pipe organ at St Paul´s. He got quite emotional.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the Sattler family. Mr. Sattler was a powerful Choir Director! I have often thought back on the amazing experiences that we all were given by having him as our teacher.
The amazing sounds of every young voice, filling our church. When he told you to hit a note, you did it!! What a Blessing to have had him in our lives...

My sympathies to the Sattler family. Mr. Sattler was my 5th and 7th grade teacher at St. Paul's Lutheran School. He directed the school choir and also taught me violin lessons at your home on N. 12th St. and Superior Ave. On April 28, 1979, Mr. Sattler returned to Sheboygan to play for my wedding. It meant the world to me that he would come and do me the honor of playing 'Jesu Joy' on my wedding day. It was, and always will be my favorite song. I have a most beautiful picture of him playing the organ, along with our soloists Jack and Travis Schmidt. I think of him every year on our wedding anniversary! It was a very special day and Mr. Sattler was a very special man. My sincere sympathies on your loss.

What a trip down memory lane it was to page through the obits and see my teacher from grade school (in the 60s') and church organist from St. Pauls in Sheboygan. What a beautifully written obituary it was, surely a testament to the life he lived, bringing people to love music, and sharing the message of Christ. My sympathy to the entire family. Cherish your memories of him, he was a remarkable man. God Bless.

Mr. Sattler was inspirational and instrumental in guiding me in character (mental and spiritual), values and moral aptitude! His ability to instill the love of music (vocal, instrumental) was epic and life-changing and affected my life in so many ways. His loyalty and love to his students was shown in his gift of a sacred song written for my eighth grade class of '65! He was passionate, caring, demanding and expectant of the people he interacted with but that was what made him who he was. I'm honored to have known him and to have been a part of his marvelous journey throughout his life time ! Until we meet again! Debe

We knew Gene for many years. Through LLL, teaching at St Johns in Berlin, and camp LuWisoMo. A great man of God. My parents, Rev. Art & Olgo Senn (deceased) met Gene in Ohio when dad and mom were in ministry there. Truly a small world. Our Christian sympathy to the entire Sattler family. May God continue to give you comfort and peace. As christians, you know you will see him again. Our love and peace.

Eugene would have known my father Charles from LuWiSoMo. I remember his time as the Director although I was in high school and then college. He always had a smile around the campground.

It was a great joy and pleasure to work with Gene for over 11 years. He was a well-educated, dedicated, humble and helpful fellow servant of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Bride, the Church. We look forward to seeing him in the pasture with our Good Shepherd.
