Martin Salm Obituary

Martin H. Salm

Chilton, Wisconsin - Martin H. Salm, age 92, of Chilton died on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 at Westhaven in Brillion. He was born January 9, 1929 in Chilton, son of the late Martin & Eva (Birkholz) Salm. Martin married Marjorie Zorn on October 27, 1948 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chilton; she preceded him in death on November 21, 2010.

Early in his working career, Marty farmed and worked for Briess Industries for 8 years before he began applying his entreprenuerial spirit owning and operating MarCals Restaurant in Chilton for 30 years, and 13 years in Brillion. His employees and customers were family, and he enjoyed taking a short break from the stove to shoot the breeze over a cup of coffee at the counter.

Throughout his life, Martin cherished his Catholic Faith. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church where he devoted many prayerful hours at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel and volunteered as a religious education instructor for the youth of his parish. He was very active in the pro-life movement for many years.

Martin also appreciated everything that his community was and gave of his time to make this place everything it could be. Among other civic works, he helped to establish the music pavilion for Chilton. He served 9 years on the Chilton City Council and was a strong advocate for the New Hope Center in Chilton where he also volunteered driving bus. Martin looked forward to making the Christmas season bright for all of the children throughout the area, and, in retirement, lent his smile and warm welcome to those who passed through the entryway at WalMart in Darboy.

Marty looked forward to relaxing in front of a good baseball or football game (and loved sharing stories of playing them in his youth). He never passed up an opportunity to play Sheepshead with friends or family. Above all else, Marty loved his family and the time he could offer to them. He enjoyed making them wood lawn ornaments, and taking time to laugh, love and be grateful for the blessings they all were to each other.

Survivors include his children: Jane Schwalbach, Pat (LeRoy) Meyers, Kathy Salm, Nancy (Ken) Mueller, Mark (Jean) Salm, Ann (Mark) Rusch, Barbara Salm, Mary Jude Salm, Phillip (Delia) Salm; daughters-in-law: Alexandria Salm, Judy Gerhartz - Salm; 38 grandchildren; 58 great grandchildren with another arriving soon; his siblings: Sr. Bernadette Salm, Ray (Kathy) Salm, Edgar (Carol) Salm, Louie (Sandy) Salm, Barb (Perry) Wood, Mary Bartels; his sisters-in-law: Jean Salm & Norma Salm; and a close friend: Joe Schmidlkofer. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents: Martin & Eva; his wife: Marjorie; 2 sons: David Salm & Paul Salm; infant children: Margaret Mary, Samuel Peter & Mary Eva Salm; his siblings: John (Lucille) Salm, Dorothy (Arvin) Halbach, Mike "Vincent" Salm, Margaret (Melvin) Reinl, Bill Salm, Theresa Catherine (Ron) Weed, Frances E. (Richard) Manning, Lawrence G Salm; brother-in-law Gary Bartels, and Grandma Florence.

A time of visitation will take place on Monday, February 8, 2021 at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. At the close of visitation, prayer services will be offered by the Knights of Columbus and the Good Shepherd Parish. A private Mass of Christian Burial will be taking place.

There will also be an archived video to be watched in the future. A memorial fund has been established in the name of Martin H. Salm for the New Hope Center in Chilton and Vida, formerly known as the Fox Valley Mother & Unborn Baby Care.

Martin and his family were grateful for all of the loving care that was given through the Calumet County Hospice Agency, Brillion Westhaven and the entire care team from Ascension Medical Group. Marty was also appreciative of the hospitality given to him from Ann & Mark Rusch for opening their house to him and the day time care givers who were a part of his life.
