Walter TeWinkle Obituary

TeWinkle, Walter

Walter TeWinkle, age 87, of Sheboygan, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, May 24, 2011, after a brief stay at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.

Walter was born March 2, 1924 in Sheboygan to Arthur and Katherine (Dommisse) TeWinkle. He attended Grant Elementary School and Sheboygan Central High School. During WW II he served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Italy. Following his honorable discharge, Walter attended DeVry Electronic School in Chicago.

On May 27, 1953 Walter and Janet Otte were united in marriage at the home of her parents by Rev. Henry J. Vermeer.

For the majority of his work life, Wally owned and operated Wally's Appliance Repair in Sheboygan.

Wally was a lifetime member of Hope Reformed Church where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and Sunday school teacher for many years. Many of the children at Hope church knew him as "Uncle Wally."

For the last fifteen years, Wally truly enjoyed countless hours of volunteer service at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center.

As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. His greatest joy came from the wonderful times shared with his family.

In addition to his loving, devoted wife, Janet, he is survived by four children, Bill (Jill) TeWinkle of Elkhart Lake; Kathy (Fran) Charland of Kewaskum; Sandra (Mark) Vollbrecht of Howards Grove; and Jim (Pam) TeWinkle of Wilmet, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, Peter (Julie) TeWinkle of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kate (Chad) Meyer of West Olive, Michigan, Amber (John) Donath of Filmore, WI, Chris (Robin) Charland of Rock Springs, Georgia, Andy Charland of Kewaskum, Alex Charland of Phoenix, Arizona, Benjamin Vollbrecht of Oshkosh, Melissa Vollbrecht of New York, Robert Walter Vollbrecht of Howards Grove, Max Rezek-TeWinkle, and Kelly Rezek-TeWinkle, both of Wilmet, Illinois; seven great-grandchildren, Sydney, Sami, Xoe, Colby, Emma, Wil, and Josh; one sister, Elsa (Harlan) Lokker and one sister-in-law, Marjorie TeWinkle both of Sheboygan; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard and Robert TeWinkle.

A funeral service in celebration of Wally's life will be held at 6:00 P.M. Thursday, (TODAY) at Hope Reformed Church. The Reverends Peter TeWinkle and Kate Meyer will officiate. A time of visitation and support will be held at the church, 612 Ontario Ave., from 3:00 P.M. until the time of service. Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens.

A memorial fund has been established in his name for Hope Reformed Church and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.

Wally will be remembered by his family and friends for his unique sense of humor, care and compassion for others, and his award-winning smile.

Wally's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, Sheboygan Senior Community Rehab, and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for their kind and excellent care.

Janet, Bill, Kathy, Sandy, and Jim, and other family members;
Wally's passing is of course, a blessing for him and a sadness for all who loved him. How I remember his silliness when as children our family would visit yours and he would keep us laughing. We just could never get enough of him and thought he was the greatest! It seems as though he was known by everyone for being funny - a gift that was surely God-given.
My prayers and thoughts are with all of you as you celebrate his life and his homegoing. It meant a great deal to me when several of you came to Dad's service and I wish I was there to repay the kindness. Although it has been years since I saw any of you, I will miss him just the same.
Love to each of you from,
Shirley Smies

Dear Bill and Family,

Wally was one of those people who could always make others laugh. Evan always enjoyed Wally at church; when he was little, Evan called him the "funny man." Your dad brought joy, laughter, and strong faith to so many over his long lifetime.
Our prayers are with you!

Dear TeWinkle Family
So very sorry to hear of Wally’s passing. Such a kind hearted man that ALWAYS made me laugh and smile. It took me a long time growing up to understand he actually wasn’t technically a member of our family because he felt like family and was always “Uncle Wally” to us.

Deepest Sympathies,
Bill Kellner
