SHELBY- Dr. Robert Reid Blackburn, age 86, died Thursday, November 28, 2019 at Atrium Healthcare Cleveland. Born in Cleveland County on December 12, 1932, he was the son of the late Reid McSwain Blackburn and Kate Bridges Blackburn. A member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, Dr. Blackburn is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rose Marie Creswell Blackburn; three daughters: Barbara Blackburn Hale and husband Pete, Becky Blackburn Williams, and Brenda Blackburn Morrison and husband Quinn; and two grandchildren: Matthew and Jenna Williams.
First and foremost, Bob was a loving husband and father who adored his wife Rose and his three beautiful girls. A true sports fan, Bob loved his Duke Blue Devils and enjoyed playing golf. Throughout his over forty years of vibrant membership at Boiling Springs Baptist Church, he modeled servant leadership in many aspects of church life, including his time as a deacon and as Sunday School Director..
A U.S. Army veteran, Dr. Blackburn, lead author of Advocacy from A to Z, has been a lifelong educator. After teaching in public schools and earning his doctorate, he became a professor at Louisiana College and Gardner-Webb University. During the early part of his career, he coached football, basketball, and baseball, then he spent years as a basketball referee. While at Gardner-Webb, he was the Chairman of the Health and Physical Education Department and taught thousands of children to swim at the GW pool. Before his retirement, he was active in the area of health education, particularly in the movement for Smoke Free Schools in North Carolina and drug abuse prevention. He received multiple awards over his career including the National Association of Local Boards of Health's?(NALBOH) Everett I. Hageman Award awarded to a board of health member who has demonstrated outstanding leadership on a local board of health and commitment to, and enthusiasm for, local public health, two Bronze Medallions from the American Health Association-NC for his work as an AHA volunteer, the Leadership Award from NC Tri-Agency Task Force for outstanding leadership in the "Smoke-Free Class of 2000", honor awards from state, district, and national AAHPERD (American Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance) organizations and is a Fellow of the North American Society of HPERSD Professionals. In the spring of 2008, he was presented the Inaugural Dr. Robert Blackburn Advocacy Award by the NC- American Heart Association.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at 11:00 am at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Keith McKinney officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park. Dear Rose, Barbara, Becky, Brenda, and Family,

I am sorry to hear of "Coach Bob's" passing. He will be sorely missed. He was a wonderful athlete, coach and mentor to those of us who played basketball, football and ran track at GW when he was coaching in the early 60's. His legacy and influence will be felt for many years to come in the lives of the athletes and students he coached and taught. We are keeping all of you in our prayers.

Blessings,

Jolene Jackson

It is with heartfelt condolences to learn that Bob is no longer with us and has gained his angel wings. As he was a true patriot and champion of helping people. His advocacy work in healthcare is legendary and is still talked about. I am a proud recipient of the American Heart Association award that bears his name- and is displayed with much pride and will never forget the legend of Robert Blackburn and what he means to so many of us.

Rose,
I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Bob. What a man! I was glad to read all the things I did not know about him. But I do know, that your eyes always sparkled when you spoke of him. Harold thought much of him also, and sends his condolences.
I do not still see you 'up close', but want to give you a hug dear lady. I always enjoyed our chats when I saw you, and want you to know I'm thinking of you, praying for you now, and have not forgotten you. I miss just a few special ones, and you are in that group. Hugs and tears we would surely share, if I could see you in person. I know so many thought so well of Bob, GWU friends, Ava-- and it's the way others' faces would light up- that says so much about you both: lights in this world.

Big smile for you now, for the treasures, and I pray many blessings pour into you in this painful time.

Dr. Bob and Rose at naming of Robert "Bob" Blackburn Award -NCAAHPERD Joint Projects

Picture was taken at Convention when Dr. Bob's JRFH/HFH Award was announced. We no longer do this fund raiser for NCAAHPERD-Sm, but there are several who received the Joint Project's Highest Award named for Dr. Robert "Bob" Blackburn. This award was given each convention to an outstanding Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart Participant...Dr. Bob was the first person in North Carolina to get our NC physical education association involved with the American Heart Association in 1975...Many of us made sure this important fundraiser was promoted so that NCAAHPERD and the National Association AAHPERD received the necessary funds to promote active health, physical education and fitness programs in our public schools in North Carolina. The funds allowed us to advocate for physical education and healthful living "active" learning. With Dr. Blackburn's beginnings, we developed assessments with SDPI, we sought legislative action, we created curriculum for Jump and Hoops Activities and we involved many professionals throughout our State. Many thanks to our great Mentor, Dr. Bob Blackburn. Bob made the Joint Projects job very important to our profession. Thank you, Dr. Bob and his #1 Assistant Rose.

To the Blackburn family...We Loved your Husband, Father and Grandfather. Remember God's Love
surrounds Bob and Rose because, both made a difference in the lives of many children being N.C. healthy active learners. Our deepest sympathy to all the Blackburn family.

Dr. Blackburn was a president of the Association for the Advancement of Health Education while I served on the board of directors and was a mentor to me. He was also a founding member and served on the board of the Foundation for the Advancement of Health Education. I so enjoyed our professional and social meetings where he was a tireless supporter of health education...and full of fun. He introduced me to Jive Bunny and the Master Mixers while we invented van dancing!

I am writing these words for Rick Barnes. His illness has taken a toll on his body and he is no longer able to do much with his hands. Bob was a very dear friend and a wonderful colleague. Rick and Bob were not able to get together to see each other these last few years, but they did communicate frequently by phone. Ricks heart is saddened but he is a better person for having known Bob.
