SHELBY - Mr. John Clinton "Clint" Newton Jr., 87, of 612 Peach Street, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Hospice Cleveland County.
He was born on Aug. 28, 1922, in Spartanburg County, S.C., to the late Clint Newton Sr. and Lillian Eaker Newton. He graduated from Shelby High School, and then graduated from the McCallie School for Boys and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served the United States in World War II as Captain of a fighter squadron, one of the few which flew under the British Royal Air Force insignia. For that service he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and eight Air Medals. He was Founder and President of Ansley Inc.
He was appointed by Governor Terry Sanford as Cleveland County's first Highway Commissioner in 1961, and was later appointed by Governor Jim Hunt to the board of trustees at UNC Chapel Hill, where he served for eight years, including as Chairman. A former member of First Baptist Church of Shelby, he more recently became a member of Episcopal Church of the Redeemer with his wife.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Hull Newton Campbell.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ansley Schenck Newton; three children, Clint Newton III of Shelby, Ann Newton of Pownal, Maine and Robert Newton and his wife, MaryKate Cunningham and their daughters, Lily Rae and Grace Elizabeth of Chapel Hill; his brother, Gene Newton and his niece, Beth Albright and husband, Ned, his nephew, Sandy Newton and wife, Sharon, and their son, Jake, all of Rock Hill, S.C; his nieces Sheila Bolick and husband, Harry, Linda Aldworth and husband, Don, and their son, David, and Vickie Plumstead and husband, Bill, all of Greenville, S.C.; his former brother-in-law, The Rev. John Campbell and his niece, Alison Gilbert and husband, Pete, of Shelby, and his nephew , David Campbell and wife, Lori, and daughters, Lauren and Ansley of Warner Robins, Ga.
