JAMES WHITE

MATTHEWS-James W. White, 92, of Matthews, N. C. passed away on June 3, 2017, at Plantation Estates Retirement Community. He was born on April 1, 1925 in Shelby, N. C. the son of Daisy Kaiser White and Clarence Clyde White. Jay was raised and educated in Shelby, N.C. and following graduation from high school enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. He trained and flew on B-24's during World War II. After his discharge in 1946, he married his high school sweetheart Margaret Hord and they lived in Shelby until 1950. They moved to Raleigh, N. C. following his enrollment at NC State University. Jay received his Civil Engineering degree in 1954 and began a 35 year career with Duke Power Company in Greenville, S. C. In 1959, he was transferred to Duke's General Office in Charlotte and progressed through the years to the position of Vice President, General Services until he retired in 1988.

Mr. White was active in numerous Duke and civic affairs in both Greenville and Charlotte. He enjoyed traveling to many of the states as well as many international countries. Golf was his favorite pastime and he looked forward to weekly outings with his friends. He was a longtime member of Providence Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and in many other capacities. Jay was a member of the Jim Wylie Sunday School Class.

Jay is survived by his wife of 70 years, two sons, Brad (Jeanie) and Richard (Pamela); three grandchildren, Jeremy (Alana), Katherine Elliott (Dustin) and Patrick (Beth) and four great grandchildren, Eva, Eli, Matthew and Isaac. Jay is also survived by his sister Margaret Williamson of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and brother, Bobby White (Joyce) of Shelby and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jay and Margaret moved to the Plantation Estates Retirement Community in Matthews in 2006. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m., on Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Plantation Estates, 733 Plantation Estates Drive, Matthews, N. C.

A reception for family and friends will immediately follow the service.

Interment will be private for the family.

The family would like to thank the staff at WillowBrooke Court for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Providence Baptist Church, Bereavement Committee, 4921 Randolph Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28211.

Arrangements are in the care of J.B. Tallent Funeral Service and Crematory.

I have many memories of working for Mr. White at Duke Power in the 80's. I'll never forget how excited he was when someone was selling watermelons from their vehicle in the Power Building Parking Lot. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
