Ruby Baker Obituary
She was born in Cleveland County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Philip Baker Jr., her son Luther Philip Baker III and grandson, Jim Abernathy Jr.
Mrs. Baker was a prominent citizen of Kings Mountain. She was the 11th of 12 children born to WG Hughes and Florence Wells Hughes in 1917. Mrs. Baker grew up in what is now known as the Dixon School Community. She attended Wingate College, taught school, worked as secretary for Phoenix Mills, and in 1979, retired after serving as executive vice president of the Kings Mountain Savings and Loan for numerous years.
She was the first woman in the North Carolina Financial Industry to hold that position. She served on many boards of directors in the area, volunteering and leading various groups over the years.
Mrs. Baker was an active citizen of Kings Mountain and Cleveland County. She was involved in the creation of a book about the history of Cleveland County, "The Heritage Book," the Kings Mountain Historical Museum and a former member of the Kings Mountain Woman's Club.
She was also a charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain, where she served in many capacities. She will be well remembered for her generosity to others, her kind heart, love for all creatures and her welcoming smile and kindness.
Mrs. Baker is survived by daughter, Ellen Abernathy of Grover; granddaughter, Cathy Schmieg, six great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brother, Bob Hughes and wife Sue; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation: Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain
Funeral Service: Saturday at Resurrection Lutheran Church at 11 a.m.

dear ellen so many losses all at once and now your long lived mother too. I grieve for you knowing how grateful my mother was to Conrad and Florence Hughes to teach in the Dixon school. I noted Shirley's passing regretfully. Hope all is well with you.
