Larry Sabin Obituary
Larry Thomas Sabin, 82, of Yerington, Nev., passed away peacefully on Feb. 4, 2024.
Born Dec. 15, 1941 to Muriel (Smith) and Ellery Sabin at Stearns Hospital in Ludington, Larry lived his rambunctious young life with his sister Lynn, along with his adoring grandparents, Florence (Andersen) and Dezera Smith, great grandparents, J.B. and Gertrude (Sneare) Smith and many cousins and friends nearby, insuring a steady stream of family parties and all day picnics.
Larry grew up loving camping, hunting, fishing and most sports undoubtedly inspired by his Grandfather J.B. who entertained sportsmen from all over the Midwest in his bar/restaurant, Smith's Recreation, which had the first bowling alley in northern Michigan and who owned a club team, the Ludington Mariners.
When Larry was 8 or 9, it wasn't unusual for him to bring home up to 40 Lake Perch fishing off the Lake Michigan breakwall just a block from home. Once he entered high school, Larry entertained friends with his Elvis imitations during parties and poker games. He kept a gun rack in his bedroom (it was a different time then) and played football for Ludington High School and declared Coach Joe Kowatch an important mentor as well as close family friend Gordon 'Shine' Olson.
Larry's family moved west at the end of his junior year to Reno, Nevada where he attended Reno High School and played football. At the University of Nevada he became a member of Delta XI Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity. While at the University of Nevada, he met his first wife Marilyn (Howard). They had two sons, Thomas of Newport Beach, Calif. and Michael, of Boise, Idaho. Graduating with a degree in business, Larry began his banking career with First National Bank of Nevada. His career took him to Yerington where he fell in love with the valley. He made lifelong friends in Yerington while perfecting his woodworking and trap shooting skills. Most importantly to Larry, he met his second wife, Jeanne. Together they enjoyed frequent trips back to Ludington, deer hunting in Paradise Valley and remodeling their home.
His sons remember spending time together in Ludington walking the breakwater to the Lighthouse, canoeing down the Platte River and golfing at Lincoln Hills where "Big Bertha" seemed to always get the best of Larry and his sons never let him forget that. His family fondly remembers the love and care he gave to his grandmother and mother. He drove many times to Michigan, often staying for long periods of time caring for them while they were ill, handling repairs on the house, or building a new front porch.
Larry carried himself with dignity and strength during his valiant 4-year fight against lung cancer. He loved and appreciated those who provided tender care and assistance during the past four years. Larry's close friends Bodie and Tweety Bodenstein and Dick and Becky Goodwill provided extra help, assistance and love in his later years. Dr. Kaleb Wartgow, whom Larry was very fond of, provided Larry and his family wise counsel and support. Nilva Wise, Larry's sister-in-law, also cared for Larry and shuttled him to doctor appointments.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne, the love of his life. He is survived by sons Michael, Thomas and wife Brenda; his grandchildren, Nicolas, Connor, and Hailey (Sabin) Landa; stepdaughter Janet Norma Sites; sister Lynn and husband Robert Bailey; and niece Amanda Bailey (Jordan) Glenn.
In typical Larry fashion of not wanting to draw attention to himself, there are no services. A celebration of life will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a gift in Larry's name to The Community Foundation of Mason County, Attn: LHS 59 scholarship fund.
