Charles H. Garrett, D.V.M.

JONESBORO, LA - Charles H. Garrett, D. V. M, 76, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 1, 2010. He was born January 21, 1934 to the late Cecil H. Garrett and Myrtle Jones Garrett in Jonesboro. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 3 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Edmonds Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Louisiana. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Jonesboro United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Strawbridge officiating. Interment will follow at Gayla Traina Memorial Cemetery.

He is a member of the Jonesboro-Hodge High School Graduation Class of 1952. After attending Louisiana Tech to study pre-veterinary medicine, he was accepted to Texas A & M University. He was a proud Aggie graduate earning a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in May, 1959. Dr. Garrett returned to Jonesboro and established Jonesboro Veterinary Clinic where he practiced small and large animal medicine for over 47 years. He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Northeast Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Garrett was first elected to the Jackson Parish Police Jury in 1988. He was reelected continuously with his last term ending in 2008. During his tenure on the Police Jury, he also served on the Executive Board for the Louisiana State Police Jury. Some of his proudest accomplishments for his community while serving on the Police Jury were the building of the Jackson Parish Community Center, Veterans' Memorial Park and Health Unit.

As a life long member of the Jonesboro United Methodist Church, Dr. Garrett served on various committees including the Board of Trustees. He also served on the Governor Jimmie Davis Tabernacle Board and many other community organizations including the Lions Club and Red Cross. Dr. Garrett was the Grand Marshal of the 1994 Christmas Wonderland In The Pines Parade and the 2001 Jackson Parish Chamber of Commerce Honoree. He was very proud to call Jonesboro his hometown and for the opportunity to serve his community.

Dr. Garrett is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Folks Garrett and five children, Charmelle Rouse (Jack) of Victoria, Texas; Charlotte Guidroz (Pierre) of Baton Rouge; Charles David (Chuck) Garrett (Melinda) of Jonesboro; Charlton Robert (Bob) Garrett (Karen) of Ruston and Cherie' Bosch (Jim) of Cordova, Tennessee. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren: Chase Garrett, Railey Garrett, Ty Garrett, Erin Zopolsky, Lauren Guidroz, Garrett Guidroz, Grant Guidroz, Lily Garrett, Blake Bosch, David Bosch, Ann Claire Bosch. Great-grandchildren: Gavin Doyle, Alyssa Garrett, Brody Garrett, and Jay Zopolsky.

I extend sincerest condolences to the family of Dr. Charles H. Garrett.

He truly was a “One of a Kind” man, a statesman and a kind humanitarian, who gave back to his community and his parish in full measure. The Town of Jonesboro, Jackson Parish and all who knew him will miss this great man.

Charles it was a true pleasure to have known you. May GOD grant you eternal rest and your Family strength at this time of sorrow.

Cherish his memory. A man is not dead until he is forgotten.

Blessed are they who mourn for they shall be comforted.
