David Quinn Obituary

David Saunders Quinn

Services will be held on Monday, May 1, 2017,10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Shreveport, Msgr. J. Carson LaCaze officiating. There will be a private burial.

David was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on January 10, 1967. He was a graduate of Loyola College Prep and attended Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland and Centenary College of Louisiana where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy.

David leaves behind a legacy of photographs that will be referenced and seen for many years. After assignments for the Pentagon, U.S. Navy, and Air Force in the North Atlantic Ocean, he agreed upon a work-for-hire contract with the Associated Press, photographing national and international events. His assignments included covering the war in Northern Ireland, Hurricane Katrina, and the Gulf Oil Spill. His photographs were distributed to such publications as Time, US. News and World Report, The Guardian, Pravda, Sports Illustrated, and different network broadcasts including "Good Morning America", "Fox and Friends", and the "David Letterman Show".

Always an Irish Nationalist, he unwaveringly believed in and supported unification efforts for the whole of Ireland and welcomed the 1998 Good Friday Peace Agreement. David traveled back to Dublin, Ireland April 23, 2016 for the 100th anniversary of The Easter Rising.

David is survived by his loving wife and best friend Amy, as well as her daughter and love of his life Mary Beth. He is also survived by his father Dr. Harold J. Quinn, Jr. and wife Robin, mother Judy Crow McColgan husband Bill, brother Dr. John V. Quinn and wife Kristin, sister Blair Quinn Purgerson and husband Jim, beloved aunt, Margaret Quinn, four nieces, one nephew, and many adored cousins. David was preceded in death by maternal grandparents David and Gretchen Crow and paternal grandparents Mary Virginia Saunders and Dr. Harold J. Quinn, and father in spirit, Msgr. Murry Clayton.

Honoring David as pallbearers will be Anthony Carmody, Thomas Carmody, Patrick Gallagher, Danny Johnston, Keith Kiper, Jim McClelland, Roy Prestwood, Jim Ross, Chris Sumner, and John Ware.

David paddled his own canoe and always liked to say, "I may be crazy, but at least I'm not boring". His foolish wit, ability to recall the most trivial of facts, his humble, self-effacing nature and giving spirit for others will be greatly missed by his friends and colleagues.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations may be made to the American Arthritis Foundation at www. arthritis.org, 1355 Peachtree St N.E. 6th floor, Atlanta, GA 30309 and Arkansas Children's Hospital, 800 Marshall St. #512, Little Rock, AR 72202 or to the charity of donor's choice.

David was a genuine, honest and brilliant guy with a very kind soul. He was a very interesting person with a well thought out perspective on history, culture and current events. Even in High School, I always pictured him becoming a college professor because of his insights. He would have been a great asset to the country working in the intelligence community with his keen intellect and his passion that people be treated with respect and dignity.

So very sorry Amy and Mary Beth. David was a gift to this world and on loan from God, as we all are.
As we weep, the angels are joyful. A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves us, for they live in our hearts and our minds, through us every day, they live on. Please accept my deepest condolences, he will not be forgotten.

David was a dear friend for years. He was hilariously funny, knowledgeable, and fiercely determined to be only himself in a world trying to get him to be somebody else. I have many great memories from Shreveport with David telling stories, drinking beer, and laughing very very hard. I will miss him. The memories have now become even richer. Rest in peace my brother. May the angels greet you.

This is very tragic news. David has always been so caring towards our family, always kind when anyone was in a bind and needed a friend by our side. He has been a friend since I was 15 and returned his Catholic schoolbook which was lost for years. I can't believe he's gone, such a wonderful and smart gentleman. I will seriously miss David's wry humor and wit, his intelligence and his eagerness to show the world the underbelly of what was really going on. Just tragic.

I have so many memories of good times with David. He was a gifted photographer, he worked for Associated Press. He loved Ireland and good Scotch. He used to call me in the middle of the night. He wanted to go gamble on one of the several riverboats around Shreveport. " Dave, it's one in the morning. " He called me his good luck charm. " Bro, I'll front you $500. " That offer got me out of bed, The deal was, If I won, he got back the original loan, If I lost, I didn't owe him anything. Because I am a pretty good poker player, he usually got his money back.
I hope he found some peace.
Goodbye old friend.
