Dennis Wayne Nave, M.D.

LONGVIEW, TX - Dennis Wayne Nave, M.D., died on July 21, 2006 from injuries he received in an automobile accident. Dennis is survived by his father, Harold W. Nave of Longview, Texas, and by his children Natalie and Nicholas Nave and their mother, Laura Nave of Shreveport, Louisiana. He is also survived by his brothers, Dale and Evan Nave, and his sister, Lou Vonne Johnson. Dennis' mother, Mary Lou Nave, predeceased him in 2002.

Dennis was born on November 26, 1949 in Illinois and moved to Oklahoma in 1963. He attended Oklahoma State University and then the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a B.A. degree in political science. He studied Middle Eastern affairs in graduate school at UT and studied abroad. Dennis then worked for the Texas Department of Health where he became interested in medicine. He then attended Texas A & M University to prepare for medical school. Dennis earned his medical degree from UT at Houston and was licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana and Texas. He was board certified in psychiatry and specialized in treatment of the elderly.

Dennis first practiced medicine in Longview and then in Shreveport for fifteen years where he was on the staff of Brentwood and Schumpert Hospitals and several smaller hospitals in the region and had recently returned to practice in Longview. He served a term as President of the Shreveport Medical Society and was an active member of the American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, the Louisiana State Medical Society, and other professional organizations.

Dennis had a love of learning and personal character traits such as tenacity, perseverance in the face of adversity, and a jolly sense of humor. He was a man of constant activity and action, with a true sense of adventure, guided by a tender heart and generous spirit. He was a caring physician to his patients, a trusted colleague and mentor, and a loving family man. Dennis will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. I met Dennis at a psych facility I was a nurse at. He and I talked about all kinds of things...he was a wonderful, brilliant guy who would bring in flourescent lights in a wooden holder he made himself to try to give the pts "light therapy" which we all thought was dumb at the time. He was brilliant, kind and years before his time. I really wish I had paid more attention. I am sorry, Dennis, and I love you and pray your family is doing ok.

So sorry to learn of Dennis' passing. I knew him in Medical School and the knowledge that my friend was out there has always been a comfort. The world seems a colder place, knowing that he is gone. May his memory be a blessing.

My heart is breaking with news of the death of Dr. Nave. He was one of the the kindest people I ever met and he had such a gentle soul. I feel honored that God allowed me the opportunity to have known such a person---this person. His many gifts can never be adequately stated but for me he gave me the gift of my life. He was patient as I struggled to find the reason for my life & he taught me how to find the courage needed to make it to the other side of my pain. I will endeavor to ensure each day that this gift he gave me is never taken for granted. I will remember to laugh, to enjoy silly things, to look at the wonderful gifts in the world God has given us. I will sing and play and live.

My sincere condolences go each of his family; we all know your giref is much deeper than ours.

The Ark-la-Tex has experienced a great loss in the untimely death of Dr. Nave. We had sought treatment for our mother in Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana. It was only under Dr. Nave's care that she was able to regain a sense of dignity and competence and again enjoy living. He will be sorely missed.

I am truly mourning the untimely death of Dr. Nave. He was one of finest human beings I've ever known. He was always so interested and unhurried. He was a wonderful teacher and listener - giving such valuable advice and always building my self esteem so that when I left his office, I always felt three feet off the ground. He was a great influence in my life and I intend to carry his teachings and advice as guidance. My sincere condolences to his family.

It was always an honor and a priviledge to have been Dr. Nave's office manager. In his honor I finished this poem;

My Blessing from God

I was blessed by God through you Dr. Nave,

As I watched your care and love for those you helped to be brave.

To face life’s trails for those who had doubt,

With kindness and patience bout after bout.

I saw you stand bravely through all these years,

And never saw a trace of senseless fear.

I watched as you stood calmly through all of life’s stress,

And never saw a sign of bitterness.

I saw you stand humbled and prayerful in grief,

But never witnessed one a sign of unbelief.

It was always an honor for you to be my boss and my friend,

And your message of faith I will continue to send.

So as you soar like an eagle in life’s great by and by,

I want you to know that you gave me the courage and wings to fly.

You will always remain to be a true blessing from God to me.

Thank you for that,

Terry

Although I haven't been in touch more than a few times with Dennis since 1971, when we were roommates at UT, I have thought often of him through the years. He was a great guy and a good friend. What a loss to all those whose lives he touched.

I have always know Dr. Nave as Denny. For 46 years he has been family. I have great memories of Denny and the fun times I'd have when his siblings and I were hanging around him. We all looked up to him as a role model. I have no doubt that Denny has inspired many people in the few years he was with us. I love him like a brother and will never forget him. I am blessed to have known him.

Although I was only 36 at the time, I somehow managed to slip in to become a patient of Dr. Nave's. I spoke with a trusted psychologist in Longview and told him that I had an appointment with Dennis Nave. He told me if I could get in to see Dr. Nave, I could not see anyone better, anywhere. I agree. See you when I get to heaven too, Dr. Nave.

Dr. Nave was not only an exceptional physician, but he was a caring teacher as well. Through his association with the psychiatry residency program at LSU-Shreveport, he taught most of Shreveport's psychiatrists everything we know about mental illness in the elderly. His skill and kindness will be missed by all.

Dennis diagnosed my mother with Alzhemiers many years ago. At a time when little was known about the diease he treated her with dignity and compassion. Through the years of theapeutic visits his words of wisdom calmed her fears and encouraged my father as she slowly slipped into the diease process. The love and compassion he shared with them taught me how to be a better person but more importantly a more compassionate and understanding pastor. I thank God for men like Dennis, truly he was a righteous man in the eyes of God. My family was blessed to have known him.

Dr. Nave was the one physician who was able to detect my Mother's illnes and then direct the appropriate treatment. We looked forward to each visit with this man who held the answer to so many of our questions. He was so kind and caring, you always thought you were the only person in the world when you were in his office with the multitude of books scattered about the room. He loved his children and was always so concerned about their welfare. Our prayers are with your family and staff. Kellie we love you. Thalis Mouser and Dianne Lyle

Dr. Nave was an inspiration to have met. I loved the man and will miss him greatly. In our short year together at Pathways, he taught me a great deal about Geriatric Psychiatry and was a blessing to whomever he met and most of all to his patients. We will all miss him so much.

I took my 14 year old daughter to Pathways last weekend to meet him. She wants to become a psychiatrist and he was pleased to discuss the practice of psychiatry with her. I will miss you Dennis. God bless you and your family. Thank you for your kindness and love.

Dr. Nave was a very dear friend to our family. He diagnosed my mother with a rare degenerative brain disease 5 years ago and told her she would not even know him by this time. She saw him for the last time a week before the accident and she is doing better than she has in years. I know this was because he constantly made sure that she received all of the right treatments for her illness.

Our family has been deeply saddened by his passing. He was the hope that so many people looked towards and he was always there for his patients with such caring and concern for their well-being. He and his family are in our prayers.
