Felix Ray Rigdon

SHREVEPORT, LA - A memorial service celebrating the life of Ray Rigdon will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 10, 2007, in the Sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport. Officiating will be Rev. Bryan L. McDowell and Dr. Robert Shelton. An inurnment will be held in the Memorial Garden of the First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport on Sunday, March 11, 2007.

Ray had just celebrated his 74th birthday on Valentine's Day. This was an appropriate birthday for a gracious and loving person. He went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thursday, March 1, 2007. Ray loved his church and had attended and been a member since 1960, serving as deacon and elder for many years with honor and dignity.

Ray was born February 14, 1933 in Ashland, LA to the late William Henry and Mae Sullivan Rigdon. After his discharge from the U.S. Army at the end of the Korean War, he began his long career with the Louisiana Department of Transportation. He spent his first 15 years in the Construction-Engineering Department, mostly in a supervisory capacity. His last 17 years were in the District 04 Headquarters as a Maintenance Engineering Specialist Supervisor. After retiring from the Louisiana Department of Transportation, he began working for CGM Engineering Firm and retired after eight years of service giving him the opportunity to work for his wife, Ella, as her yardman.

He was a big baseball fan and it all started while playing at Castor High School and continued while visiting his daughter, Lisa. They attended many of the Houston Astros games. Ray was also an avid fan of the Shreveport Captains.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and in-laws, Woodrow W. and Clara Liles Zappa of Minden, LA. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 47 years, Ella Rigdon of Shreveport, LA; two daughters, Katherine Anne Rigdon of Shreveport, LA and Lisa Rae Rigdon of Houston, TX; one sister, Betty Jean Mauldin and husband, Charles of Shreveport, LA; one niece, Penny Brown and husband, Doug; two great nieces, Chelsea Oakes and Sarah Brown, all of Longview, TX; and cousin, James Terry Rigdon of Shreveport, LA.

Ray had many great friends from work, church and his neighborhood, and some very special men for whom he worked, Mr. Henry Brown, Mr. Wayne Yates, Mr. Roy Mitchell, Mr. Bruce Easterly and Mr. Stan Cothran.

Ray was a member of the Ashland, LA, Masonic Lodge #196, member of the Scottish Rite, and a member of the El Karubah Shriners of Shreveport.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Felix Ray Rigdon our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Ray. And to Ray it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Korean War while serving in the U.S. Army. Ray we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,452 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Ray’s family and loved ones.
