George McKinnon Obituary

George Bruce McKinnon

SHREVEPORT, LA - Hey… It's Been a Great Life!

Please don't grieve for me. I've had a wonderful life! What more could a man ask for? I had close and meaningful relationships; I had two careers in which I found maximum challenge and reward. I also found time for recreational interests such as gardening, raising livestock, travel, hunting and fishing; all of this and even more important, a good relationship with my heavenly Father and His promise of even more to come!

I, George Bruce McKinnon died November 12, 2009, preceding me in death was my love of 57 years, Betty Timmons McKinnon. I am survived by my daughters, Dana McKinnon Sansalone and husband, Maurice, Susan Tuberville and husband, Durell and Jenny McKinnon Merolla; grandchildren: Randall Seth Harlan and wife, April, Matthew Zan Harlan and wife, Pam, Joshua Durell Tuberville and wife Claleigh, Dustin Bruce Tuberville, and wife, Lindsey, granddaughters, Jackylin GCrystal Merolla and Britney Autumn Merolla. My four grandsons were my favorite squirrel hunting buddies. In addition to this pleasure I was the grandfather of two of the best little Country & Western singers, Jackylin and Britney. They could bring tears to my eyes with their rendition of the song, "Grandpa". I am also survived by two great-granddaughters, Daisy Sunshine and McKinna Ryan, and four great-grandsons, Jackson Davis, Asa Cash, Elijah Morgan, and Tristan Bryce. Also left to remember me is my youngest brother, Gary McKinnon; Kenneth died on his birthday in 1996, they were my best friends. Another of my good fortunes was in having such a great family of "in-laws"! My wife's family was truly a source of love and appreciation. No man could have had more.

I enjoyed two careers, I taught Vocational Agriculture in Caddo Parish for 33 years beginning in Greenwood High School. I later opened departments at Fair Park, Woodlawn and Southwood High School where in 1973 our FFA Chapter was named Best in the Nation. Later I founded the Agriculture Career Center on West 70th Street.

I developed a Cotton Consulting business in 1960 and in 1985 it was named one of the top-consulting firms in the United States. This work led to an intimate knowledge of cotton farms and plantations all over the Ark-La-Tex. I retired from Cotton Consulting in 1998 after 38 years, both of these were occupations I truly loved. The great students I taught and the fine farmers with whom I worked made my life a daily pleasure.

Pallbearers will be his four grandsons, Ray McMullen, Don Fowler, Jack Freeman, Tom Cathey, Andy Loftus and Donnie Jordan.

Farewell ceremonies will be held at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Southside, with my son-in-law, Rev. Durell Tuberville conducting the service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 14, 2009. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in Greenwood, LA. Visitation with the family will be from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, November 13, 2009 at the funeral home. Rose-Neath Funeral Home

Hello McKinnon Family
I don't know you folks or even Mr. McKinnon but I must comment on what a delightful write-up on his obit was. I enjoyed reading this and being so positive about his life. Yes we all should step back and reaccess ourselves and see whether or not we have had a good life. The majority of us probably have. My condolenses to the McKinnon Family

Dear Susan and Family -

What a sweet blessing to hear from your father himself how much he enjoyed his life and was blessed. When someone goes to heaven I have heard that a memory becomes a treasure - my the treasures your family must be beginning to experience today! I lost my dad eight years ago Susan and I do know that it is a "mixed" blessing - your heart is aching and rejoicing at the same time. You have my families prayers.
My guys and I will be lifting you and your family up in prayer.

In HIS great love -
The Dukes

What wonderful memories I have of visiting Aunt Betty and Uncle Bruce. Fishing in the pond, Stan and I taking the row boat out during a thunderstorm! The wonderful food, my cousins, aunts and uncles, Grandma and Grandpa. How I would get tht southern drawl after just a few days.
I will cherish those menories.
Love to you all.

Mr.Mckinnon was the most dedicated teachers I was privileged to have at Woodlawn High School. He was tireless in his efforts to help us boys learn and experience agriculture. I will always have the most admiration for him as a person and a teacher and will never forget the things he taught.
He definitely enriched my life.
Thanks, Mr. Mac

Mr Mac, as we called him, was very instrumental in my life. He was my employer and teacher. He always taught by example. The people in my family that knew him will truly miss him.
