James L. "Buster" Salter

Ringgold - Funeral services for James Lonnie "Buster" Salter, 92, of Ringgold, LA will be held Friday, November 20, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. in Rockett Funeral Home Chapel, Ringgold, LA. Officiating will be Bro. Taff Watts and Bro. Mike Cottingham. Burial will follow in Williamson Cemetery, Bryceland, LA. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M., Thursday, November 19, 2020.

Buster was born April 26, 1928 in Bryceland, LA and passed away November 17, 2020 at his home in Ringgold, LA. He lived life to the fullest and loved to be around people. He was known for grinding the best corn meal around, farming, and checking on his cows. Buster was a Veteran of the United States Navy where he was a champion boxer. Dancing was his passion and he never lacked for a partner. Buster never met a stranger and will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Annie Salter; five sisters and one brother.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Gloria Jane Salter of Ringgold, LA; sons, James Richard Salter (Danny) of Dallas, TX and Charles Randall "Tiger" Salter (Judith) of Heflin, LA; daughters, Renee Jones (Dudley) and Roxanne Salter (Leslee) both of Ringgold, LA; sister, Betty Moore of Ringgold, LA; seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Justin Jones, Josh Jones, David Shaw, Eddie Vise, Lane Mangum, and Jesse Williamson.

The Final Salute

“Brothers and Sisters-in-Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to James Lonnie (Buster) Salter our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Buster. To Buster it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during the Korean War while serving in the U.S. Navy. Buster, we commend you for your honorable military service. You are a true patriot, who served your nation and your community with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family, church and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

I'll never forget 'Buster'! As best as I can remember, he the only adult we were allowed to call by his 'first name'. He befriended my Dad (Eddie Windham) after we bought the old Gidden's farm just down the road from Buster and Gloria Jane's home.

Memories of Buster...
My Dad bought a bull from Buster...and that was what we called that bull...Buster. Not sure if that was already it's name...or if we named it!

One of Buster's nephews (Bill Salter) was a good friend and he would invite me to go along 'coon huntin' with Buster and several others. Buster had the first...and only...carbide lamp...I ever saw. I guess those hunts would always occur in the fall because we'd go to an area, turn the dogs loose and build a fire. Then we'd sit around and listen for when the dogs would have a coon 'tree'ed'.

Buster didn't mind if we'd use some 'adult' language. Funny the things we remember, isn't it?

I remember my Dad telling me how he was talking to Buster about the 'grass' he was cutting for hay. Apparently, it had some weeds in it and my Dad was asking Buster if he was really going to feed that to his cows. Told me Buster's response was "Beats snowballs!" LOL!!

To Miss Gloria Jane: I'm so sorry for you and the loss you're dealing with...65 years of marriage has to leave a huge hole. I pray that you will be comforted by the memories of Buster.

To all the kids and family: What a legacy your Daddy / Uncle / Grandfather has left for everyone. Buster was a great man who was a wonderful neighbor. Be proud of your heritage!
