For Patsy, John and all his loved ones, I add my prayers and express my best wishes. My admiration for John began as a classmate at the old St. John's High (now Loyola).

What I remember best was a calm, winning personality and outstanding performance in three sports. On those rare occasions when we met after graduation, he always downplayed those efforts. I don't want his kids or grandkids to believe that. He was good, kids, really good.

It wasn't surprising that he joined the Marine Corps and later pursued a successful career in law enforcement. I seem to recall he was the youngest officer ever to make Detective on the Shreveport police force. On good authority I heard a combination of empathy and toughness made him an outstanding interrogator.

It was, however, a complete surprise decades later to discover he had become a superb writer and poet.

I thank God for having known him.

Mrs. Pat and all the family,
You are in my prayers as you lay John to rest. I have much treasure on the other side too. Thank God, Jesus has taken the sting out of death and made a way for us to our eternal home. Papa is home and we will be too some day soon. I can still see him on his golf cart zipping around amd making sure everyone had what they needed.
Love, Linda Hatcher Jimmy's Mom

I have always consider John Templin to be my very best friend in the world. We grew up together in Shreveport and we were both considered part of each others families. We played baseball together and I bellieve John could have been the best catcher in professional baseball if he had chosen that instead of the Marines.
We separated after high school - he in the Marines in Hawaii, and me in the Army in Japan. We got back together after the service while I went to college and he joined the Shreveport Police Dept. John's talent for poetry came to light when my father, Clark King, passed away in 1986 and John presented a book of his poems to me in my time of grief. I would like to share one of his poems:

MY REQUEST

Come lightly,
As on wings of silk,
Unwelcome though you be.
Stand quietly,
And I will know
That you have come for me.
Be gentle
When you touch my lips
And steal away my breath.
Be merciful
As I accept . . .
That moment known as death.

John will be greatly missed but he will live forever in my heart.

This is from those of us who grew up on Claiborne Ave in the 40s and 50s - John (his Dad always called him "Frankie") was part of our gang, even though he lived "back in the woods behind the Linwood Apartments. Those were fun times and John was a large part of the fun we had growing up then. He will be missed - his poetry, however, will live on forever.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to John Franklin Templin our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for John. And to John it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. John, we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to John’s family and loved ones.
