Joseph Scoggin Obituary

Joseph Y. Scoggin, Jr.

Joseph Young Scoggin, Jr., 93, passed away on October 22, 2012, from complications of a stroke earlier this year. Funeral services will be held at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel at 10:00 am on Friday, October 26, 2012. Officiating will be Bro. Billy Pierce assisted by Bro. Tommy Patton. Interment will follow at Hill Crest Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 25, 2012, at the funeral home.

Joe was born on June 22, 1919, in Louisville, MS, and grew up in Kosciusko, MS. He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1940 and was assigned to the 555th Army Air Force Base Unit during World War II, participating in the battles of Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received an honorable discharge after attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945. During his time in the service he developed a love of flying, which continued throughout most of his life. After the war, he owned a crop dusting business for a period of time in Shreveport before being employed by Delta Air Lines.

While working for Delta, Joe started one of the first car rental companies in north Louisiana, Airline Car Rental, Inc., in 1950. He was soon approached by Warren Avis and courted to become one of the first licensees in the newly formed Avis Rent A Car System. His company continues to operate the Avis and Budget Rent A Car franchises in Shreveport and Monroe, now managed by second and third generation family members. Joe was a charter member of the University Club of Shreveport, a member of the Palmetto Country Club, and he was a member of the Cypress Baptist Church. In retirement, he was an avid vegetable gardener and a true mechanical engineer. He could fix just about anything.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Y. Scoggin, Sr., and Carrie Bishop Scoggin, and sisters, Billie Joyce Cameron and Lavonne McDowell. His survivors include his loving wife of 69 years, LaVaughn Covington Scoggin, sons, W. Randal Scoggin and wife, Sabra Bushnell Scoggin, Dudley Y. Scoggin and partner, Thomas C. Needham, Jr., grandchildren, Sabra Scoggin Hicks and husband, Nathan L. Hicks, Jonathan R. Scoggin and wife, Jamie Griswold Scoggin, two great grandsons, one great granddaughter, and a brother, Lt. Col. Lockwood B. Scoggin, USAF (Ret.), of Montgomery, AL.

Honoring him as pallbearers are Billy Hudson, Barry Scoggin, Joe McDowell, Jonathan Scoggin, Nathan Hicks, and Tom Needham.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to Dr. Seborn Woods, and the staffs of Willis-Knighton Pierremont, LifeCare Pierremont and NurseCare for their loving care and attentive support.

Not sure what to say?

October 28, 2012

Uncle Joe has always been one of my very favorite relatives for his love of life and no-nonsense attitude about most everything in life. I am thankful for being able to spend a quite a few good days with him growing up and as an adult on rarer occasion. His smile and laugh are what I remember most and his courage. You will be missed greatly by all -- Vicki Scoggin Driggers (Montgomery, AL)

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Joseph Y.Scoggin, Jr. our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Joe. And to Joe it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during W-II while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Joe, you are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Joe's family and loved ones.
