Martha Ellis Obituary

Martha Lorraine Frierson Ellis

Shreveport - Martha was a lifelong resident of Shreveport, Louisiana. She was born on March 16, 1940, the youngest child of Lorraine Screven (Scrib) Frierson, Jr. and Athlyn Mading Frierson. Martha graduated from Byrd High School and LSU with a teaching degree. She taught school in Caddo Parish for over 40 years, spending most of her time at Woodlawn High School and Evangel Christian Academy. She loved and cherished teaching high school and later counseling, especially athletes. She conducted study halls after practice and late in the afternoon, where she fed the boys and worked with them on their English assignments. She also worked countless late hours helping students build confidence, prepare, and manage stress when it was ACT and SAT test time. She had a deep love for her teenage students and wanted them to excel on the field, in the classroom, and in life.

Martha taught Sunday School at Shreveport Community Church and had a Bible Study for many years at Montclair Assisted Living Facility.

Her love for God and her desire to help others find Jesus was utmost in her life.

Traveling the world with her lifetime friend and "sister" Pat Chapman was also a joy in her life. She visited China, Southeast Asia, Russia, the Baltic States, Italy, England, Ireland, Scotland, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. She was the co-author of six published books on her travels, a fiction novel (still available on Amazon), and several published poems. She enjoyed the world to its fullest.

However, her greatest joys in life were her precious sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. She made every Grandparents' Day, and countless Thanksgiving and Christmas season trips to Tallahassee, Florida to be a part of the lives of her grandchildren. She made many trips to Walt Disney World just to have fun with her children and grandchildren - where on one such trip, she co-piloted a World War II era plane like her big brother Edwin flew over Italy in 1944. Grammie will always be part of her families' wonderful memories.

Martha is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Screven and Sabrena Watson, and their daughter, Shelby Lorraine. Bo and Teah Watson and their daughter, Maddie. Stephanie Ellis and her children, Sydney Grace, Barron, and Bridges. Her daughter, Robin Ellis, and her children, Ellie (Ryan), Bridges, Mary Ellison, and Frances. Her son, Michael Ellis, and her sister, Pat, who was her best friend and travel buddy for many years. Martha also had one great grandchild, Ellis Watson - which to her combined family; says it all! Finally, she is survived by her two puppies Mitzi and Penny, whom she loved and adored and were with her to the very end.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, brother Edwin, "Little Verdi", husband Bobby Ellis, and sons Robby Ellis and Andy Ellis.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Evangel Christian Academy Winners' Circle International, in Martha's name, to help students attend school or to a charity of your choice.

Due to Covid-19 and the ongoing pandemic, the family has chosen to hold a small private celebration of life ceremony. A celebration of her life will also be held in the future at Shreveport Community Church.

Martha was my co-worker and mentor-in-life at Evangel for many years. She helped me spiritually in one of my darkest times. She found and gave joy to all people in all circumstances. She exampled out what a true teacher should be: concerned and helpful to all areas of students’ lives. She’ll always remain ONE OF THE GREAT ONES in my view. God bless all of her loved ones.

Martha Watson Ellis was my sophomore English teacher at First Baptist High in 1971-72. She was remarkable, bringing life to literature every day. It was her class that convinced me to major in English and become an English teacher. I also taught sophomores in Caddo Parish and retired in 2008, using many of her shared lesson plans through the years. She was a born teacher. I last saw her at Barnes and Nobel where I bought her travel book. I am saddened by her loss and pray God’s comfort embraces her family.

I can recall the first time I attend her Sunday School class she greeted me with love and made me feel so comfortable. We connected and I knew God placed me in her path. She was fun to be with and I thank God for the times we shared together. Surely she is wearing her crown and sporting one of her many scarfs. I will cherish her friendship . Martha was a Great Lady and true to her calling as a servant of God

I have been lucky to have many incredible women in my life; Martha Ellis was the QUEEN of them all. Martha was a master at communication, and she could make a rabid dog feel welcomed, important and loved. Martha Ellis was a joyful person and really celebrated life. It was contagious. She excelled at giving advice and had an unique way of making you feel you were very special. I always thought I would get to see her one more time again. For selfish reasons this makes me sad. Finally, the best came for Martha. FATHER GOD brought this legendary woman home. Martha has probably not stopped cheering and dancing. Until we meet again, my friend, Martha Ellis.
