Claire Drinnan Obituary

Community volunteer devoted to family and friends Claire M. Drinnan, 88, of Great Kills, a devoted wife, mother and community volunteer whose passions ranged from sailing to sewing, passed away on Jan. 14, 2022 in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton. Born Claire Stephens in Port Richmond on Sept. 21, 1933, she was descended from the Merrill family, among Staten Island's oldest settlers. She spent part of her early childhood in England and maintained a touch of British style and refinement throughout her life, friends and family recalled. An accomplished seamstress, she often made her own outfits that were fashionably accessorized. Mrs. Drinnan was an alumna of Port Richmond High School, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Hunter College. She worked at the New York Trust Company in Manhattan before retiring to raise her family. She met her husband, Bill, at a CYO dance in 1952, and they were married on Sept. 17, 1955. The Drinnans were members of the Richmond County Yacht Club in Great Kills, and cruised extensively on their sailboat, Fairwind. They also enjoyed traveling to destinations in Europe and South America. Mrs. Drinnan's easy-going personality, optimistic outlook and strong organizational skills made her a welcome addition to any volunteer organization. She was a longtime volunteer at Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dongan Hills, and an active member of the Staten Island Historical Society Women's Auxiliary and New Dorp Moravian Church. She taught classes in astrology, and enjoyed inviting a wide circle of friends into her home for luncheons and bridge games. Mrs. Drinnan's husband died in 2020. Surviving are her son, David, and daughter, Louise, who look forward to carrying on her positive ways, warmth and generosity. Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, is handling arrangements, which include private cremation. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, January 19, 2022 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Moravian Open Door, 347 East 18th Street, New York, NY 10003 or online at moravianhouse.org. Dear Louise and Dave, Although we have been separated by distance, you, your mom and dad have always been on our hearts. My heart is heavy losing Claire but I know what a happy reunion she is having with all those that have gone on before. She always stayed in touch and we can carry on the same. I will be with you in spirit and look forward to a visit in Florida whenever you are able.

We will always remember Claire and Bill who attended many of our programs and were generous supporters for many years. They loved Staten Island history and always had something interesting to share. Even after Bill passed Claire would keep in touch by email or send a beautiful card. Wonderful people who will be missed by many. We are sincerely sorry for your loss.

Your parents were genuinely amazing people - they welcomed us into the neighborhood and went out of their way to talk to Lily and keep an eye on for her when I was working. Your mom was always smiling and I loved the little notes she would send us at the holidays. She will be missed!! Love Alice and Lily-Rose
