Douglas S. Hersch

Proud Marine Corps and Vietnam veteran Douglas S. Hersch, 72, of Richmondtown, passed away at his home on September 28, 2021. He was the beloved brother of Donna Forgen (nee Palumbo); loving uncle of Allison Angioletti (nee Palumbo) and her husband Anthony; and cherished great uncle to Julianna Rose, Anthony III, and Stephen Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his sister Sue, and brothers Steven, Alan and Gary. Mr. Hersch was born in Brooklyn and raised in Rosebank, Staten Island, NY. At 18 years old Doug enlisted in the United States Marines Corps serving from May 1966 – April 1970; January 1974-January 1976; and April 1976-January 1983, including combat service in Vietnam from November 1967-April 1969. Doug was most proud of his service to our country where he earned three Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal Combat Action Ribbon. Doug often sent letters home to family documenting his time in service, including one letter that was published in the Staten Island Advance in December of 1967. Doug enjoyed spending time with his family and continued to volunteer his time and services to various military groups and special events including the reading of names for September 11th, in memoriam of his brother Alan. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Monday, 10/4, departing at 8:45 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Rosary R.C. Church at 9:30 am. Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, 10/3, from 3:00 to 8:00 pm.
