Helen Damitz

1937 - 2023

Mother of Three & World Traveler, "She Was Our Everything" Our loving mother, Helen Damitz (Spitzen) passed away on February 14, 2023, after a brief illness. She was 85 years old. A native Staten Islander, Helen was born on May 29, 1937, to the late Helen and Lawrence Spitzen. Helen grew up in Stapleton along with her late brother Larry. After graduating Curtis High School, Helen went on the work for the telephone company. In November 1957, Helen married her beloved husband, John. Together, they raised their three children, Russell, Gerri and Mark. Helen devoted her life to her children. She became PTA President, Cub Scout leader, Little league cheerleader and class trip chaperone. In addition, she volunteered her time at the local Salvation Army. Helen is forever remembered by her loving husband of 66 years, John. Her children Gerri Graboski (Damitz) and Mark Damitz. Her grandchildren Christopher Damitz; Jessica Damitz; Andrew Graboski, and Daniel Graboski. Her son-in-law Edward Graboski, and her daughter-in-laws Colleen Damitz and Lisa Damitz; as well as an abundance of family and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved son Russell Damitz. Although her family grieves her loss, they take comfort knowing that Russell and Helen are together again.
