Olga Zawada (nee Nemits), age 92, passed away on May 13, 2017, at Staten Island University Hospital North. PHOTOShe was the beloved wife of Frank (married for 72 years); loving mother of Barbara Scragg and her husband, Harry, Robert Zawada and his wife, Lois, Joan Rothman and her husband, Thomas, Denise Mengani and her late husband, Joseph, Cheryl Witkowski and her husband, Tony. She was the cherished grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of 18. She was predeceased by her seven siblings.
Olga was born and raised in Elizabeth, N.J. She graduated from Battin High School in Elizabeth, N.J. She moved after her wedding to her husband in 1945, settling mostly in Westerleigh. Together, she and her husband raised five children.
Olga enjoyed being the head of the house (the matriarch), known for her kielbasa and sauerkraut at the annual Chrebet family barbecue.
She enjoyed shopping at Costco, especially riding the little cart in there, traveling and cruising all over the world, cooking and watching cooking shows, and sports (volleyball, softball, baseball, hockey, football). Olga rooted for the Mets, Jets and Giants, and the Rangers. As per her family, "she enjoyed getting the last word."
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Funeral from the Matthew funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family R.C. Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Gertrude's Cemetery, Colonia, N.J. Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
