Patrick Francis Walsh, 77
NYC Dept of Correction captain honored for acts of valor, devoted family man, Emerald Society's 'Irishman of the Year'
Patrick Francis Walsh, 77, of Prince's Bay, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2018, at Staten Island University Hospital.
Born in Brooklyn's Red Hook, he also lived in Park Slope and Bay Ridge. He attended the New York Institute of Technology, where he studied architecture. He wed his devoted wife, Barbara (Ommondson) in 1962 and they settled in Prince's Bay in 1973 to raise their family.
Mr. Walsh was Cubmaster of Pack 5 at Our Lady Star of the Sea and later became Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 5, in which he played an instrumental role in restarting the troop. He then served for 30 years as a member of the committee for Troop 21, Tottenville.
Mr. Walsh worked for the New York City Department of Correction and retired as a Captain in 1980. He served at Rikers Island, Brooklyn House of Detention, Manhattan Court, and Staten Island Court. His proudest assignment was at Potter's Field providing dignified funeral services for New York City residents who were alone at the time of their final rest. During his 20 years of service, he was the recipient of several departmental medals for superior performance and acts of valor. He served on the executive board, as treasurer and first vice president for the Emerald Society and was driving force in the formation of the Corrections Emerald Society Bagpipe Band. Mr. Walsh was proudly named Irishman of the Year in 1980.
After his retirement, he ran a successful locksmith and alarm business working in all five boroughs and in the Tri-state area. During this time, he also traveled the world with his wife.
Mr. Walsh was an avid Yankees fan but, most of all, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed summers in Breezy Point with his children and grandchildren and entertaining at his winter home in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. Mr. Walsh was a history buff and was a great tour guide of New York City and Brooklyn. He was a storyteller of epic proportions and always had a joke that could make anyone smile.
Mr. Walsh was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a life member of Stolzenthaler Council 1675.
Mr. Walsh leaves behind his sons, Michael (Christine) and Bryan (Irene), and his daughter, Kathleen Hagen (Cliff). He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Megan, Matthew, Patrick, Ryan, Tara, Brendan, Kate, Erin, and Emily. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara; his son, Patrick; and two grandsons, Timothy and Shaun.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Tuesday, July 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, July 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island. Mass of Christian Burial is on Thursday, July 19, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
