William McMillen Obituary

Career in restoration, master of many trades William (Billy) McMillen, age 81 of Glenmont New York passed away quietly at home on November 9th. Billy was born on Staten Island and lived there for his entire life until he retired and moved to Glenmont in 2003. Anyone who met Billy even briefly knew what a savant he was. A master, truly, of many trades, he could grain paint a box, deftly use a molding plane he restored, and design a timber frame dwelling. But as a tinsmith, he was in a league of his own and the maker of the most intricate tin items. He helped train many tinsmiths across the country, and his knowledge was critical to the establishment of the thriving tin shop at Colonial Williamsburg, where he donated many of the tools used in the shop. Billy had a long career in restoration. He was director of the restoration department at Staten Island's Historic Richmond Town, a site his father helped to found. He helped Don Carpentier move and restore many of the buildings at New York's Eastfield Village beginning in the 1970s. In fact, he was still helping to restore Eastfield's buildings the week before he died. Over the years, he also acquired an exemplary, tasteful collection of American material culture, tools, and firearms. With his polymath abilities also came a generous, fun-loving personality. He was an ace at dominoes, made great rum punch, and could entertain with his stories for hours. He was a friend to all and always gave others his time, talent, and treasures. Billy and his wife, Judy, who passed away last year, were energetic supporters and generous donors of EAIA for decades. Judy was EAIA's first woman President-a fact of which Billy was very proud. They were both long time members of the Brigade of the American Revolution. He is preceded by his parents Loring and Eleanor and his loving wife Judy. He is survived by his brother Harlow, sister Mary, daughter Sally Spinosa, son John McMillen (Germaine) and son Chris Tintle (Liz) and grandchildren Richard, Vincent, Liam, Emma, Katy and Micah. A genius has left us, and though his loss leaves a hole in our hearts, his legacy will live on in all he touched. Thank you, Billy, for your full life and the lessons you taught. Visiting hours will be at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave, Delmar, NY on Tuesday, November 15th from 4 to 7 pm and on Wednesday, November 16th from 2 to 4pm (Reception to follow on Wednesday). Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to Early American Industries Association and the Historic Eastfield Foundation. www.applebeefuneralhome.com Applebee Funeral Home 403 Kenwood Ave. Delmar, NY 12054 (518) 439-2715

I took two tin classes with Bill at Eastfield Village, and visited with him at the Tintinkers Convergences in various locations. He was an excellent teacher, an entertaining dominos player, and always pleasant company.

So sad. I met William in Eastfield Village where I took a half dozen classes. I know he had a good book collection of the early American trades and decided to see if I could find him to ask him if he had any books on early American furniture, which I´m almost sure he had many. It´s only now I find out of his passing. He was such a wealth of information along with the late Don Carpentier. Wow, those two could captivate a class in so many fields of true authentic restoration. Rest in peace William. You will be missed.

We miss his smile and wave as he walked the neighborhood. I miss the sound of him working in the garage. He was a skilled tinsmith. Our prayers have been out for his family and I'm sure his wife was awaiting him. They were a lovely couple and have fond memories of them.

Best Regards,

To Billy's family: my sincere condolences. I am Don Carpentier's sister and have known Billy and Judy since I was a teenager (I'm now 64). They were both great friends of my entire family. Their contributions to Eastfield were immeasurable, but I personally learned a lot from them and enjoyed their company over the decades. Billy helped keep Eastfield's spirit alive since Don's death and his loss is yet another blow to the restoration community. But he will be missed as much for his outgoing nature as for his talent. My thoughts are with you, if a bit belated.

I've known Bill since I was 18 years old- I'm now 67.
I cannot begin to describe the sense of loss I feel- a father figure, a mentor-
He's taught me so much about the material culture of the 18th century... I will never forget him.

So sorry to hear of Bill's passing. He was a great guy to work with at Richmondtown as well as "on the job" teacher ("the whiz"). A formidable marksman and and team member (NSSA), and a good friend from long ago.

My sympathy to the family on Bills' passing. He will surely be missed by many. There is probably not a tinsmith that has not been touched by Billy in some way. "Tinwiz" was one of a kind.

So many wonderful memories of time spent with Billy and Judy in Richmond Town with my students from the North Bennet St. School, and of course, the frequent adventures at Easfield Village. Billy was a mentor to so many of us, as we were all students. They welcomed us as part of their family for so many years. He was fascinating, fun and had a voracious appetite for all things historic and a willingness to share his wealth of knowledge.
We are all the richer for having known him.

Thank you Billy.

So sorry to hear of Billy's death. I remember him as a small child in Richmond town. His lovely mother, Eleanor, and my mother were good friends and I remember her very fondly. I think Billy got much of his talent and personality from this gracious and multi-talented lady.
My condolences to Harlow, who I also remember, and to the rest of Billy's family.
