VERSAILLES — Eugene Henry Mescher, Age 91, of Cohee Road, Versailles, passed away of natural causes Saturday evening, February 13, 2021, at the Versailles Rehab & Health Care Center in Versailles, Ohio.
He was born April 1, 1929, in Maria Stein, Ohio, to the late Dick & Hedwig (Bohman) Mescher. On May 29, 1957, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Osgood, Gene married Eileen Mary Ann (Rethman) Mescher who survives. Also surviving are four of five children: Linda & Mark Rutschilling of Yorkshire, Jerry Mescher (dec.), Robert & Azile Mescher of Newport, Ken & Karen Mescher of North Star, Mary Jo & Jerry Ronnebaum of Chickasaw and a daughter-in-law, Barbara & Steven ReVard of Plain City; eleven grandchildren: Julie & Tom Parker, Jeff & Amy Condon, Cindy Rutschilling, Nick & Katie Rutschilling, Aaron Mescher, Melanie Mescher, Rachael & Adam Bruns, Rich & Rachel Mescher, Bridget & Eric Huelskamp, Matt & Katie Ronnebaum and Holly & Matt DeMange along with 19 great-grandchildren; two siblings, Luedna Gelhaus of Fort Recovery and Urban Mescher of Maria Stein; two brothers-in-law: Jim Werling of Burkettsville and Leonard Rethman of Yorkshire.
He was preceded in death by one sister Marilyn Werling and brothers & sisters-in-law: Eugene Gelhaus, Judy Mescher and Marjorie Rethman.
Mr. Mescher was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War. He retired from dairy farming in 2016 and had been engaged in farming all of his working life. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, the Maria Stein American Legion and a past board member of the Darke County Farm Bureau. Gene was an avid reader. He also enjoyed playing cards, working puzzles and especially carpentry. Over the years, the treasure trove of items he built for family and friends included 300 toy barns.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 AM, Thursday, February 18, 2021, at St. Louis Church in North Star with Rev. David Howard presiding. Interment will follow at St. Louis Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday 3:00 to 7:00 PM and Thursday 9:00 to 9:45 AM at Gehret Funeral Home in Fort Loramie. Use of face masks and social distancing will be necessary at all funeral rites.
Memorials may be made to the Osgood Life Squad, Rustic Hope or charities of choice. Private condolences may be expressed at www.gehretfuneralhome.com.

Rick & I are so sorry for your loss of Eugene. I knew him all my life because of my Mom & Dad , Edith & Elmer Stuck. I know he was a hard working Dairy Farmer like my Dad. God Bless.
