CARTHAGENA — The Rev. John L. Bensman passed away on May 25, 2018, at St. Charles Center (Carthagena).
He was born on May 28, 1929, in St. Patrick, Ohio. He did his preparatory studies at St. Gregory Seminary and studied theology at Mount St. Mary's Seminary of the West. He was ordained on May 26, 1956, at St. Monica Cathedral in Cincinnati, Ohio, by Archbishop Karl J. Alter.
The Rev. Bensman during his 62 years as a priest served many different parishes including assistant at Holy Angels Parish and faculty of Holy Angels High School, Sidney, and Youth Director of the Sidney Deanery, Pastor of St. Nicholas Parish, Osgood, Pastor of Precious Blood Parish, Chickasaw and St. Sebastian Parish, St. Sebastian. The Rev. Bensman retired from active ministry on July 1, 2004.
The Rev. Bensman was the last child of Joseph and Emma (Hoying) Bensman. He is survived by a sister-in-law, Marcella Bensman, Russia and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Sister Mary Edmund S.C., Herbert and Bettie Bensman, Norman Bensman, Sister Mary Josephine S.C., Sister Joseph Maria S.C., Julianna and Wilfred Bergman, Joseph Bensman and Victor Bensman.
Reception of the Body: Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Charles Center (Carthagena), 2860 U.S. Route 127, Celina, Ohio 45822; (419-925-4516.) Celebrant and Homilist: The Rev. Richard W. Walling. Visitation: continues until Mass of Christian Burial.
Mass of Christian Burial: Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Charles Center. Celebrant: the Most Rev. Dennis M. Schnurr. Homilist: the Rev. Richard W. Walling.
Burial: Thursday, May 31, 2018, immediately following the Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery, 7555 Hoying Road, Anna, Ohio 45302. Celebrant: the Rev. Steven L. Shoup.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the St. Charles Center.
