NEW BREMEN — Lawrence J. "Wiss" Wissman, age 61, of New Bremen, Ohio, died on Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at the Arthur G. James Cancer Center, Columbus, Ohio, after a courageous fight with ALL.
He was born on Aug. 17, 1953, in St. Marys, Ohio. He was the son of James and Mary Lee (Doenges) Wissman, who survive in New Bremen. On Aug. 10, 1974, he married Teresa Lampert, who also survives in New Bremen.
Other survivors include his children, Andrea and Joshua Barr, of Columbus, and Benjamin and Jessica Wissman, of New Bremen. He was the proud grandpa of Mackenzie Wissman and was excitedly anticipating the arrival of his second grandchild. Other survivors include his siblings, Thomas and Denise Wissman, of Colorado, Dianne and Carl Schwartz, of New Bremen, Rick and Pam Wissman, of Colorado, Donna and Scott Brinkman, of Kentucky, and Sherri and Sam Harris, of Georgia; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Larry retired as the Superintendent of Public Works from the Village of New Bremen. He was an active member of the Church of the Holy Redeemer in New Bremen where he had been an Usher for many years and had served on the property commission. He was a retired/honorary member of the New Bremen Fire Department where he was certified as an arson investigator. He had served as an auxiliary member of the New Bremen Police Department and was a member of the New Bremen Emergency Squad.
He served on the New Bremen Tree Commission, helping to distinguish the village as a designated "Tree City USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation. He was an avid poker/card player, enjoyed woodworking and collecting New Bremen memorabilia. He was a Reds, Buckeyes and Bengals fan. His family and the community of New Bremen were important to Larry and he was always willing to help family and friends. He was a compassionate husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and neighbor.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in New Bremen with the Rev. Thomas Mannebach officiating. Burial will be in the German Protestant Cemetery, New Bremen.
Calling hours will be on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, from 3 until 8 p.m. at the Gilberg-Hartwig Funeral Home in New Bremen and on Tuesday from 9 until 10 a.m. at the church. The Rosary will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the church.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Church of the Holy Redeemer or to the New Bremen Fire Foundation or New Bremen Emergency Squad.
