Alan Rosenfield Obituary

Well known Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge, Alan Rosenfield, passed away unexpectedly on May 11, 2022. He was 70 years old.
Alan was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 6, 1952 and adopted by Joseph and Lucille Rosenfield. His family relocated to Encino where he attended Hesby Street Elementary School, Mulholland Jr. High School and graduated from Birmingham High School in 1970. It was during this time growing up in the San Fernando Valley that he became acquainted with his lifelong friends, David Pomerantz, Larry Underhill, and Randy Oppenheimer.
Alan was active in school activities, politics and his religious youth group. He was also class historian, which is fitting to those that knew his genuine interest and dedication to his friends and their families. As an auto enthusiast, Alan started his own car club. In his summers, he worked at the Hollywood Bowl.
Alan attended Grinnell College in Iowa, graduating with honors in political science. One of his favorite extracurricular activities in Iowa was aviation. He became a pilot, earning not only his private pilot's license and instrument rating, but also his pilot instructor's rating, a multi-engine rating, an engineer's rating, and an impressive airline transport rating.
Upon on his return to LA, Alan joined the LA County Sheriff's Department as a recruit. After graduating from the academy, he worked as a Deputy Sheriff in a variety of assignments including the life-changing role as a bailiff in various downtown county courts. Not only did he meet mentors who spoke to him about being a lawyer, but Alan realized that if you were to be in Court, the best seat to have was the Judge's. While still working full-time, Alan entered the Southwestern University School of Law. He was admitted to the bar in 1981.
In 1984, Alan began his work as a deputy District Attorney until he was appointed to the Newhall Municipal Court by Governor George Deukmejian on January 23, 1990. He was elevated by unification to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 2000. Judge Rosenfield presided over criminal matters for 17 years in Newhall, Lancaster, and Antelope Valley courthouses. He sat in Central Civil in 2008 and transferred to the Santa Clarita Courthouse in 2014. Judge Rosenfield retired from the bench in 2017. He had served as an assigned judge since his retirement and had recently signed up to help his colleagues resolve case backlogs through the Court's END Program.
Alan was proud of his service in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1983-2012. He served as an Army Judge Advocate Officer and was the recipient of the JAA Outstanding Career Armed Services Attorney Award.
When not on the bench, Alan enjoyed many hobbies and interests that also led to his ever expanding group of friends. He was an excellent chef, he played the banjo, he loved cars, motorcycles, aviation, his pets, collecting whimsical art and traveling with his wife Angela. He and Angela took many cruises and enjoyed spending time in Carmel.
Alan was a 40 year resident of Santa Clarita where he was known for his community service and as a treasured friend and neighbor. All who knew Alan will miss his loyal friendship, his kindness, his good hearted pranks and his sense of humor. He was truly a good man and will be missed enormously.
Alan is survived by his wife, Angela, stepson Robert Zhang, his brother Joe (Paula), nephews Joshua (Jessica), Jordan (Sally), niece, Jocelyn, and numerous cousins; close friends Randy and Julie Oppenheimer; and ex-wife/friend Tanya Fisher. He was the cherished Godfather to Joshua Rosenfield and Peer Marie Oppenheimer.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, June 16 at 11am at The Oaks at Valencia, 26550 Heritage View Lane, Valencia, CA.

Alan S. Rosenfield...........Alan and I were very good friends, however, I did not learn about his passing until almost a year after his passing. In the last few years, we communicated, like the "Bennett's", several times a year. Rest in peace my friend! Alan and I first met in 1981. I was a Senior Law Enforcement Consultant with the Department of Justice, Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (DOJ-POST).....and I was the POST Coordinator responsible for the Curriculum and Instruction for the Statewide 31 Basic Academy programs----and Alan was a Criminal Law Instructor for the LA Co SD Sheriff's Academy. I was holding a Basic Academy Criminal Law Instructors Update for all 31 Academy Criminal Law Instructors......He and I hit it off immediately and became friends. Over the years I watched his ascension from a Deputy Bailiff with LACoSD to a LA Deputy District Attorney, and then finally appointed to the Bench first as a Municipal Court Judge, and then as a Superior Court Magistrate. After my 3.5 year Basic Academy assignment, then I became a DOJ-POST Area Rep to a little over 100 law enforcement agencies in LA (East of I-5) including LA Co Sheriff's Department, Riverside, San Bernardino, Kern, Mono and Inyo Counties.......which required me to be in Southern California every week for 3+ years. Alan and I spent a lot of time together, going to Dodgers games (I was a SF Giants Fan), we both loved to cook, so we were constantly cooking up gourmet meals together; his girlfriend at the time introduced me to a very nice lady, and the four of us used to go to a lot of Musical Concerts, Restaurants, etc. Our top Concert was at the Hollywood Bowl where his brother was House Manager: Henry Mancini celebrating his 25th Music Anniversary (Phenomenal). I was ten years senior to Alan, and I watched this wonderful, talented and professional excel in his career. He was an Airplane Pilot/Instructor, and he was a JAG Officer in the US Army JAG Corps, retiring after 20 years as I believe a Lt. Col.......and Alan could honestly play a Banjo better than any Musical Professional I have ever listened to. We both were "Car Nuts!" I was very happy when Alan and Angela met and were married. I hosted them in San Francisco at "Scoma's Italian Seafood Restaurant"----What a great time we had! I then became a Bureau Chief with DOJ-POST which kept me more in Sacramento and Northern California up until my retirement in 2004. Over the remaining years until his passing, we saw each other infrequently.....keeping in touch by phone and email. Like Linda & Richard Bennett, in the last year or so prior to his passing, My wife and I had tried several times to contact Alan with no return call, email, etc. Like the Bennett's, had we known of his passing, we would have wanted to be at his "Celebration of Life!" I loved Alan like a brother, and I was extremely privileged to call him my friend! Farewell my "Little Brother" (I am 6'5"). My wife Pam and I express our love and friendship to Angela! God Bless! Respectfully, Don & Pam Moura - [email protected]

Al and Rick were friends and flying buddies (both were certified flight instructors) back in the 60s in the San Fernando Valley, California. They reconnected through the internet in the 2010s and resumed their friendship mostly by telephone but with some personal visits. The friends touched base with each other every several months. Yesterday, Rick said to me that he had tried several times to contact Alan with no return call which we both agreed was strange. We hoped that he and Angela were probably on a much talked about but much delayed vacation. As a fluke, I Googled Alan. To our great shock, his obituary appeared. We are so sad that we have found out so late about our friend. Alan, you were a character, and we will miss you very much. You would leave messages on our answering machine that told us the ball was now in our court and "that´s all, doc." Well, the ball was in our court, and we failed to return it. Please Rest In Peace.

It was a pleasure to work with Judge Rosenfield for many years. He was smart, helpful, funny and so loyal to the court. I could never thank him enough for all of the times that he covered assignments as an Assigned Judge. He was a great person and I am lucky to have called him my friend. The world just lost a great one. Rest In Peace Judge Rosenfield.

I first met this funny, kind and accomplished gentleman several years ago. He was a long time friend of Harvey Cantor, who was a friend of mine. I was able to spend a few hours visiting with Alan over that time. We were able to have discussions about his love of cars and airplanes. He was always ready and willing to engage in all sorts of subjects. He will be missed by his family and so many others. RIP Alan.
