Carrie Lou David
SPRINGFIELD, IL - Carrie Lou David nee Risdon, 37, of Springfield, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center.
Carrie was born July 29, 1976, in Burlington, IA, the daughter of Richard Risdon and Pamela (Dickey) Smit. In addition to the love of her parents, Carrie was raised, loved, and cared for by her entire extended family, notably Cheri and Mike McKitrick of Fruitland Park, FL; her Aunt Karen and Uncle Leroy of Dysart, IA; Aunt Jenny Dickey of Belmont, IA; and of course her sisters, Dawn Carlson of Cedar Rapids, IA and Amy Neiss of Fargo, ND. Together they raised an outgoing and beautiful young woman who's salt could only be garnered from unparalleled clan cooperation.
Carrie graduated from Taylorville High School and attended Illinois College majoring in Education with a minor in Drama. Carrie began her teaching career at Pleasant Plains Middle School. Carrie would soon discover she had a penchant for reaching and inspiring kids and would go on to acquire a master's degree in school counseling from Eastern Illinois University. Carrie's true muse was being a universal spark for the learning and betterment of each of her students and doing whatever that took to inspire even the most troubled student. Carrie was avidly involved in Speech, Theater/Drama, and counseling at Pleasant Plains and continues to inspire teachers and students alike through the word of her teamwork, compassion, humor, commitment, work ethic, pragmatism and genuine passion, empathy and love for the human condition, the likes of which are scarcely known.
Carrie met Andrew (Andy) David, a nurse, of Springfield in late 2008; they married surrounded by many, many supportive people and family in a simple, but beautiful (and carefully crafted by her) ceremony at Long Bridge Golf Course on June 16, 2012. Carrie and Andy deeply enjoyed each other's company, personality and being. They shared many secrets, told each other many truths and shared beliefs and values, tears, joy and support; culminating in the birth of a gorgeous chubby-cheeked daughter, Piper Jane David, on Jan. 24, 2014.
To say she will be missed is incommensurate as is evident in the overwhelming intangible effigy of sorrow, thanksgiving, empathy, and love put forth by this community. Her gracious mother, father, sisters and husband respectfully thank you all...on behalf of the perfect woman.
Carrie is survived by her loving husband, Andy, and their newborn daughter, Piper Jane David of Springfield; her mother, Pamela; her father and stepmother, Richard and Rietta Risdon; her sisters, Dawn (Steve) Carlson and Amy (Darren) Neiss; nephews, Mitch and Brandon Neiss, of Fargo, ND; aunts and uncles, Cheri (Mike) McKitrick of Fruitland Park, FL, and Jenny Dickey of Cedar Rapids, IA; her father- and mother-in-law, Terry and Saundra David; brother-in-law, Matt David; sister-in-law, Gabrielle David, all of Springfield; her cousin, Sheenan Floy Mao of Rochester, MN; as well as numerous students, and friends.
Carrie's family will receive guests on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 4-8 p.m. at Bisch Funeral Home West, 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd., Springfield, IL 62711.
A casual funeral service officiated by Rev. Betty Coffey will be held Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at 10:30 am at the funeral home. The family will greet friends again from 9:30 am until the time of service. Cremation rites will be accorded after the funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, the family and Carrie's husband respectfully request donations be made to the Baby Piper and Carrie David Memorial Fund at Marine Bank; 217-726-0600.

I met Carrie my senior year of high school. Hearing of her passing and the sudden loss upon her family was heartbreaking. She will always be someone I remember who had such a sweet spirit and truly cared for me during a very difficult time in my life. She was my South Pacific buddy, and I pray her heart lives on in all the lives she touched. She was a sweet friend and encourages me even now as I think of her. Praying for you all...

I was so sad to hear of Carrie's passing. I had the privilege of being in many of her classes as an individual aide. She was the type of teacher you always wished you had when you were in school. She always knew just the right way to help each of her students when they needed it. I will always remember her caring and compassionate ways along with that great smile that could brighten anyone's day. My sympathy and prayers go out to the family.

I'm so sorry for your loss of an amazing lady. I had Carrie as a teacher her first year of teaching. She was so sweet soft spoken pretty and always there to help her students. Married and a mother now, I can't imagine what your going through but I do know that you have an amazing guardian angel watching over you all. Your daughter is beautiful and will grow up reminding you of Carrie. I will be praying for you all and am so happy Piper is home now!

I didn't know Carrie but worked with her father-in-law Terry and just saw him New Year's Eve where he was very excited about the family gathering and imminent birth of the grandchild. No words can express the heartfelt prayers and comfort being sent to the entire family, friends and acquaintances. God knows best - trust God.

I was blessed to teach in the same school as Carrie and learned so much from her. When she taught sixth grade comp, I often went to her for advice on what to do in seventh grade comp. I was so completely overwhelmed my second week of teaching and ended up crying in her room after school one day. Just as she did with all her students, she was patient with me and calmed me down. She assured me that everything would work out, and I was doing a great job. That was the first of many times that I went to her for advice, whether it was for school or life. When I found out we were expecting our second child, she was one of the first I told. In her words, she was so excited that our "rug rats" would be running around school together, and I was too. I will miss Carrie's smiling face, her laughter in meetings, and her presence at school. She was more than a co-worker; she was a friend. Love you, Carrie.

It has been nine years since I last sat in Ms. Risdon's 8th grade comp. and lit classes, but her influence on my life has extended far beyond that classroom. Ms. Risdon believed in me enough to cast me in my first play when I was an awkward, shy and self-conscious 14 year-old. She helped me fall in love with the theater which has ultimately shaped me into the person I am today. I will never forget how fun she made learning about poetry and reading The Outsiders. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher or director. May you be at peace, Ms. Carrie "crazy drama lady" Risdon-David.

I went to I.C. at the same time as Carrie. I didn't know her well, but I do remember that she was seldom without a smile. In fact, the only time I can remember her looking anything less than happy was one day in I.C.'s cafeteria. She was in front of me in line, and after having surveyed the options available for our lunch, she scrunched up her nose in distaste and declared the whole lot of food "GRODY!!" I'm sure that's what all of us in line were thinking, but only Carrie had the guts to say it out loud!

My heart is broken for the loss of Carrie. I met Carrie on her first day of teaching at Pleasant Plains Middle School. What a beautiful young woman! With her many talents, she always cared about her students. We were of two different generations, but our friendship flourished through the years. Carrie brought sparkle into her teaching, her friendships, and life I loved the days when she would come for a visit when she was in her casual mode wearing her cap and ponytail. "Rizzy" told it like it was! She and I connected on so many levels. Her happiness grew with the love of her life, Andy. She was an inspiration to my family and me.

I knew Carrie from school and attended with her for most of our school years. When I read that she had passed, I was deeply saddened and my heart ached at the loss of such a beautiful spirit. As many have said, I will always remember Carrie's vivacious love of life and her gorgeous smile. I am so touched and blessed to have grown up with a person who had touched so many lives in such a short amount of time. My prayers are with you and your family, but remember that you will always have a beautiful guardian angel watching over you and guiding her beautiful daughter until you meet again in the presence of God. Carrie will always be remembered and honored as all of her students grow and begin to pass the treasures of knowledge and life on to their peers, co-workers, and children. May you rest in peace and I am humbled and honored to have been touched by your love of life and friendship. Until we meet again old friend...

I taught for a decade with Carrie. She was more than a coworker. She was my friend. She was there to comfort me and guide me through one of the toughest times in my life. She refused to let me sit around feeling sorry for myself. She drug me out and made me smile no matter how pouty I was. She was my rock when I desperately needed one.
I will try not to pout for your passing Carrie, but rather do what you taught me to do. Remember the good times. Let the memories comfort me rather than make me sad.
Andy, my prayers are with you and Piper.

My daughter was blessed to have "Miss Risdon" as her teacher for the 2008/2009 school year. She was one of Michaela's all time favorite teachers & when I asked her how she would describe Miss Risdon she said "fun & quirky! She always made us laugh!!" She then told me a couple of stories about things Miss Risdon did in class & Michaela's face lit up as she recalled those memories! I remember when she was a freshman & came running in the door with so much excitement because the word had even spread through the high school that Miss Risdon's boyfriend had proposed to her that day at PPMS! It speaks very highly of Carrie Risdon David to have students remember her so fondly & speak of her with so much love several years after they were in her class. As you can see, she may be gone but she will never be forgotten! My prayers go out to her husband Andy, daughter Piper, her parents, all of her family, friends & to all of her students, past & present.

Although we grew up in the same community, it was not until graduate school at EIU that I was privileged to meet and come to know Carrie. Over the next three years, we spent many nights and weekends in Champaign, acquiring the necessary skills to become effective school counselors. Carrie already possessed these skills...they were just part of who she was as a person. Being a middle school educator and counselor were such a natural fit for her. Her love of children and life in general was apparent every time you spoke with her. She had the ability to see the best in people...a truly beautiful and genuine heart and soul. She truly was and will continue to be an amazing woman. Her smile and laughter were infectious to all those blessed to be in her company. I will never forget her quirky faces and contagious giggle...she could light up a room in a matter of seconds. She will forever be missed in this world. My family and I will continue to pray for Carrie, Andy, Piper, her family, friends, students, and all who loved and knew her in the days ahead. May the beautiful memories of Carrie help you to find comfort and lead you to peace.

Not many of you know that Carrie Risdon David and I shared at least one thing in common - - we both had the same 6th Grade classroom teacher in Taylorville. Yes, tho' a generation apart, we both had Mrs. MaryJo Shoemaker and were greatly influenced by her. It is said, that one person cannot be all things to all persons... but Carrie had the rare knack of being able to teach to each child's needs, being funny, kind, firm, and keenly intelligent, all at the same time. She had a genuine insight into the 6th Grade mind like a very few others will ever have, yet she was very modest and humble. Her skills of dealing with difficult or troubled students were remarkable. She really knew her craft. She was a capable, truly brilliant, and naturally gifted teacher, and will be deeply missed by all of us in the Pleasant Plains Middle School family. As a friend and colleague, she was the BEST!

As others, my heart is torn apart and I cry for you and the family. Carrie looked and sounded like a wonderful person which I never knew or met.Take each day slowly, enjoy Piper, tell her about her mommy, take time for yourself as this is a new role for you, you will see facial expressions and things Carrie did in Piper. Cherish them! Tell people Piper's events, share them with family and friends. Sometimes memories sneak out of your eyes and roll down your cheeks. from a Pleasant Plains family member. Mary Kinner

I don't even know Carrie....but reading through this, I can feel that she was Amazing. Her photos gave me chills, the photo of her newborn daughter moved me to tears. So sad that this baby will never be swaddled in the arms of her mother. My thoughts and prayrs are with you all.

My son was fortunate enough to have Carrie as a classroom teacher and in connection with Speech. She was a kind, wonderful teacher! It is unfortunate that so many younger students will not experience the joy of being in her classroom.
My sincere sympathies to her husband, daughter, the rest of her family and the many who loved her.

Our older 2 children were lucky enough to have Mrs David. What a wonderful teacher she was and it was so obvious she had such an impact on all of her students. Carrie's light will now shine on in beautiful Piper. Keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep."
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!
For my sweet cousin Andy, and for all that knew and loved Carrie Lou.....
She is not gone. She is looking down and smiling at all of us. She will be watching over everyone she held dear to her heart, and she will be waiting with open arms when we enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
