Florence Chan Obituary

1944 - 2015

Florence Chan passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Henry Mayo Hospital in Valencia, CA, ending her courageous four and a half year fight against cancer.

Florence was born on September 2, 1944 and grew up in Taipei, Taiwan. This was also where she met her husband, Steve. She moved to Los Angeles and married Steve on February 1, 1969. Florence and Steve moved to Valencia in 1977 where they raised their children, Debbie and Michael. She worked in the business services department for Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital for 18 years before retiring.

Florence was the heart of her family. Her first thought was always the happiness and well-being of those around her, which she contributed to with her warm smile, laughter, and kindness. Her favorite activity was talking with friends and family, whether on the phone or in person over a good meal. She was incredibly excited upon the arrival of her first grandchild, Madeline.

She is survived by Steve Chan, her husband of 46 years, her children Debbie and Michael, Michael's wife Jennifer, granddaughter Madeline, and her younger sisters Mei-Ping and Mei-Ling Chung.

A visitation will be held from 10:00a.m-2:00p.m. on Monday, June 1, 2015 in Chapel of the Hills at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 Sierra Hwy, Newhall, CA 91321.

Dear Mei-Ho, You had always occupied a special place in my mom's heart. Because of Mom's current health, I would like to represent her to convey her love, admiration, and affection towards you.
For as far as I can remember, my mom, just like many other family friends who knew you, recognized and adored your gentle manners and kind heart. So much so that my mom frequently referred you as exemplary for her own daughters. Back in Taipei, she was most delighted when you visited her in her office from time to time before going back home in afternoon. That year when she was recuperating in hospital after surgery, beloved Chung Mama sent you, her college-aged precious daughter, to Mom's bedside because she knew that your special gentle touch and companionship could comfort her. It imprinted in my memory of you traveling long distance day-to-day in that summer from your home to hospital to spend time with her, and always with that sweet smile and serenity. Mom told me in many occasions that you lifted her spirit and helped along her recovery and she was forever grateful of your amazing kindness and cross-generation friendship. You warmed my mom's heart by continuing reaching out to her after her retirement to Los Angeles. You will always remain in her memory and her heart.
With fond remembrance and love,
Shu-Heng Wu Cheng (represented by Grace Na)

Hi, Mei-Ho, we know each other since we were little. our parents are friends. My sister Jackie was your schoolmate in Junior hight and college.
Steve took my wedding photos and if I remember right, my wedding was your last public appearance before you had your daughter. Later, when you moved to NY, we took over your hollywood apartment at Ardmore Street with the whole nice furniture in it. And I have to mention that you and Steve are one of the fairy couple that I truly admire.
I'll always miss you, especially your sweet and charming smile with your 2 deep dimples shown on your face.

Dear Mei-Ho, I feel so privileged and grateful to have known you and have you as a close family friend and my personal friend since childhood. Going back through the years, from Taipei to New York, then Caribou and LA, so many fond memories and images of you, as a young girl then a mom and grand mom, all re-emerged. I will always remember your lovely smile, warmth, graciousness, courage, and strength. I will miss you deeply and always keep you in my heart. With deep love,

Florence and Steve Chan were one of the first neighbors I met in Valencia in the late seventies. I remembered being impressed by Florence's attractiveness. In fact, my then little daughter referred to Florence as the pretty auntie. As we became friends, I appreciated that her beauty in fact radiates from a sweet and tender heart. Although my own hectic life did not allow me to get together with the Chan's as much as I would like, our visits were always delightful filled with interesting conversion. In spite of her illness in recent years, Florence initiated e-mails to stay in touch. I am grateful for her friendship, and deeply touched and inspired by her courage and grace. Florence, a beautiful person inside and out, will be forever alive in my memory.

Please accept our heartfelt sympathy in this hour of sadness on the loss of your beloved wife and mother. Florence had one of the warmest souls we have ever met. She was a gentle, loving, and caring person. She also had an incredible positive attitude and outlook on life. We believe all who knew her have loved and respected her. This was a great loss for all of us. We will miss her beautiful smile , her great conversation, and the time we spent together. There is nothing one can say that can ease your sorrow, but time will heal the wound. May you find comfort in the fond memories of your many good years together. Kuo-Yen & San-San

Thanks for the memory, Dearest Florence, your friendship was the most precious thing I ever cherished.

For more than 50 years, we have been through so many happy times together. In Taipei, in New York, in Main, in LA. Trips to Mexico, to New York,
to Las Vegas. Attending weddings and above all, your 70th birthday party....

Your marriage with Steven is the most enduring and endearing love affairs. I sincerely hope he can live through this hard time.

I miss you. You will always live in my heart.

Florence is such a loving and caring person who was always concerned about her family and friend's well-being and comfort them with encouraging words or good advices even during her illness. We mourn the loss of a life-long best friend in this world but her spirit and beautiful smile will forever be in our heart until we meet again in eternity.
