1924-2018
Lillian Mae Bennett, "Lillie or Lil", passed peacefully at home on Sunday morning, January 21, 2018. At 93, she left a legacy for many to remember what a great, loving woman can be. All who knew her are touched forever with an extreme fondness for who she was and how she impacted them.
Lil was born in Larkspur, CO in 1924 to Luther and Margaret Johnson. With her parents and siblings Walter, Ellen and Jennie, she moved to Newhall, CA in 1928. She attended Newhall Elementary and later San Fernando High School, as the Santa Clarita Valley did not have a high school at that time. A 90-year Newhall resident, Lil's childhood memories involved being friends with William S. Hart himself, as he was known to pass out candy and other gifts to the local children. She was often at Harry Carey's home to play with Mr. Carey's daughter. Lillie would work at her brother's bakery that was well known as the pink "Johnson's Bakery."
While visiting her aunt in Las Vegas, NV Lil would meet her soon-to-be-husband, "Bud" Bennett, in 1948. After a few short moves, they returned to Newhall and gave birth to two daughters. Pamela was born in 1953 and Jodie was born in 1959. Lil may be remembered by many as she was a school bus driver for the William S. Hart District for over 25 years. She drove for many of the high schools normal routes of transportation, as well as many sporting events. It is a job that she truly loved as it kept her young in mind and spirit.
As retirement allowed, Bud and Lil enjoyed 14 years spending their Spring and Summer in Bayview, ID. With the passing of Bud on New Year's Day 2004, Lil maintained her permanent residence in Friendly Valley, CA.
She loved to watch sports. Her favorite team was the Lakers and she was a loyal fan for over 50 years! Lil was an active and supportive mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and great-aunt, as well as friend, to many people. Lil's passion for the holidays, family and friend get-togethers, were a gift for all who attended. Everyone enjoyed her Newhall stories because of the historical significance. She expressed a genuine quality of love to all that knew her. She was a wonderful example for all...and was our beloved Matriarch.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00a.m. on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 North Sierra Hwy, Newhall, CA 91321. Viewing visitation will start at 10:00a.m. A Celebration of Life for Lil will immediately follow at the Friendly Valley club house, 19345 Avenue Of The Oaks, Newhall, CA 91321.
