Stephen Conwell Obituary

Stephen Conwell
April 20, 2025
Santa Clarita - Stephen Hilton "Steve" Conwell passed away peacefully at home in Santa Clarita, California, on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Born to Catherine and Walter Conwell, Steve was raised in the San Fernando Valley and graduated from Birmingham High School, where he played both football and baseball. He earned a degree in Business Administration from California State University, Northridge.
Steve dedicated 37 years to the Los Angeles Fire Department, rising to the rank of Captain II. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, both on active duty and in the reserves.
He shared 56 years of marriage with Patricia "Patty" Barris Conwell. Together they raised three children: Chad Conwell (Christina), Jason Conwell (Cherie), and Cathryn Muro (Antonio). He was a devoted grandfather to Grady, Declan, Brisco, Viviana, and Augustine. Steve is also remembered by his brothers Walt Conwell (Pat) and Peter Conwell (Camille), as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A passionate volunteer, Steve gave generously of his time to youth sports as a baseball coach and through organizations such as Indian Guides, Boy Scouts, Hart High School Marching Band, Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, Santa Clarita Senior Center Meals program, and Santa Clarita United Methodist Church.
An avid sports enthusiast, Steve remained active throughout his life-playing volleyball and softball in local park leagues, golfing with the Valencia Men's Club, and skiing whenever possible. He was a lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Angels and followed college football closely, especially USC and the schools his children attended.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Santa Clarita United Methodist Church, 26640 Bouquet Canyon Road. A reception will follow at Belcaro Grove House, 28201 River Trail Lane in Valencia. Guests are encouraged to wear aloha or baseball attire in honor of Steve's casual spirit.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Steve's favorite charities or a cause close to your heart: Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association; Los Angeles Fireman's Widows and Orphans Fund; Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Foundation; Santa Clarita United Methodist Church; or SCV Senior Center.
Steve truly left the world a better place. His family thanks all who have shown love and support during this time.

Steve was a wonderful volunteer for the Meals on Wheels Program when I worked at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center. I always enjoyed seeing him and appreciated the time he spent delivering meals to homebound seniors. He was a good guy! My sincere condolences to his family.

I am sorry to hear of Steve´s passing. I was a Friday Docent who worked with him during his docent days at the zoo. He was always upbeat and really seemed to enjoy working with kids. He could be counted on to be there weekly until his illness no longer allowed his participation in touring. We were lucky to have him in our program. May his memories be a blessing to all and an example of a life well lived.
Sincerely,
Paulette Heath
Former Docent Chair
