Gregory Madsen Obituary

Gregory "Greg" Allan Madsen

Gregory "Greg" Allan Madsen, 69, of Sioux City, IA, passed away November 5, 2024 after a courageous battle with schizophrenia and lung cancer. A funeral will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation 1 hour prior Waterbury Funeral Service of Sioux City. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Greg was born on September 21, 1955 in Sioux City, IA to Arnold and Mary Genevieve (Deveny) Madsen. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1974 and went on to attend the University of Iowa. Greg was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was a freshman in college. He lived with this serious mental illness and was still a smart, bright, kind, gentle, good man. He was a good soul who never complained, and walked to his own beat. Greg's family loved him and cared for him throughout his life. He lived with his parents until becoming more independent and getting his own apartment. Although Greg struggled in life he still enjoyed music (80's Madonna), Star Trek, old movies, eating out at Texas Roadhouse and Johnny Mars, and spending time at the Hardrock. Greg was the first original "Uber Driver" in the 80's, often chauffeuring family all over town. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Those left to honor his memory include his sister, Mary Jean Madsen, of Coralville, IA and Sioux City, IA; nephews and nieces: Dave Madsen, Lisa Madsen, Brian Madsen, Jenny (Scott) Oldenkamp; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brothers: Lawrence Patrick Madsen and James and Bernetta Madsen.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Siouxland Pace for their care and support of Greg.

So very sorry to hear of Greg´s passing. He was indeed a gentle soul who took way too much grief because of his condition. May you rest in peace my friend. We were classmates together at both Immaculate Conception and Heelan. Rest in peace my friend.

So sorry for your loss. The obituary was beautiful and I felt it really captures Greg's kindness and generous spirit. He remained happy in spite of so many challenges.
Jesus is caring for him now.

Greg lived in the apartments down from me for 20 years. He always walked several times a day to Sams mini mart which brought him past my home. Would always tell me hi if i was out in the garden and talked to my doggo, George.

I have noticed his absence this past year and have thought of him often. Wondering if he was ok. I did see him once at pizza ranch and told him hey.

May he rest in eternal peace.
