Bruce Campbell Obituary

Bruce A. Campbell III 1956 - 2021
Springfield, IL—Bruce Alexander Campbell III, 64, passed away on February 28, 2021. Bruce was born in Peoria, IL on May 24, 1956, son of Bruce and Alice Keller Campbell of Tucson, AZ, formerly of Springfield.
In addition to his parents, Bruce is survived by his sister, Cynthia (Morris) McWilliams of Scottsdale, AZ; two brothers, Craig of Springfield and Thomas of Tucson and his sister-in-law, Jean Campbell. He is also survived by two nieces, Allison McWilliams of Scottsdale and Melissa Campbell of Orlando, FL; and two nephews, Andrew and Michael Campbell of Springfield.
Bruce graduated from Springfield HS and Eastern Illinois University. He worked for 20+ years at the Dept. of Human Services, Division of Rehab.
Bruce loved spending time with his family (especially his adored nieces, nephews and step grandchildren) as well as his many friends. He was quick witted and marched to the tune of his own drummer.
Bruce faced a major health challenge. In high school, his only kidney began to fail and after two years he underwent a successful transplant performed by Dr. Alan Birtch. Bruce became quite active with the local kidney foundation. He also competed at the International Transplant Olympics in New York City where he received a Medal in Golf. In the late 1990s, Bruce's transplanted kidney failed, and he had another successful transplant. He was forever grateful to his kidney donors.
Bruce stayed very active until recent years. He enjoyed swimming, bicycling, golfing, hiking and attending concerts. He was an avid fan of the Cubs, Black Hawks and Rolling Stones.
His ashes will rest with his maternal grandparents in Paris, IL. A celebration of life will be held later this year.

I am so, so very sorry to see this! Bruce and I connected in some of the first years after his first transplant when I worked on the "Transplant floor" at MMC. He would bike around and was working there too I believe. Such a good hearted and passionate guy. I always so enjoyed seeing him around. Please accept my sympathies, Alice, Bruce and Craig. You are definitely in my thoughts and prayers!

Bruce was a great friend and is already greatly missed. His favorites were golf and Rolling Stones to mention only a couple.

I think back to High School and just a couple thoughts come to mind: Bruce could eat a sandwich in a single bite and often did, I think just for the entertainment value. Another thought was who knew a stock Vega could go that fast.

I always liked Bruce and liked being with Bruce. I hope you’re there, my friend, waiting on the 1st tee when I get there! We’ll hit the big draw for sure.

So many wonderful things to say about, Ram.
It was a pleasure working with him and all my Memorial
friends in the seventies. I'll think of him everyday.
Rest in peace my very good friend, Ram.

I worked with Bruce many years at DHS, he was a great guy with a heart of gold. Always had a great laugh and I really enjoyed our conversations about music and hockey. I'll always think of him when I hear the rolling stones. RIP buddy.

I had the privilege of meeting Bruce many years ago. I was a nurse working in dialysis and he had started dialysis treatments. He never seemed to let his health issues get him down. He was always smiling and had a great sense of humor. He faced many challenges but seemed to remain positive. I ran into him several years ago and he hadn’t changed a bit. From all the tributes it is apparent he touched so many lives; I hope he knew that.
Rest In Peace Bruce.

Rest In Peace, “BC”!
Bruce always had a kind word to say about everyone, a friendly smile to greet all and a unique personality that will be missed.

To Bruce & Alice, Craig, Tom, Cynthia: my sincere condolences regarding the loss of you son, brother and my best friend of 30 years. Through all the medical set backs Bruce endured, he still fought the good fight, and was the most mellow person I have known. He continued to move through the cycles of life fighting hard not to become idle. We played Ice Hockey, Golf and Guitars. With all the 20 mile bike rides and mile swims, he gathered no moss. He was truly a Rolling Stone. And till we meet again, I will miss my friend dearly, each and every day.

I hadn’t seen Bruce in almost 40 years, but during high school and college we played a lot of golf. Bruce, me, Bill Prather and Ross Bentsen were a regular Saturday foursome for several years and those were great times. I remember him dealing with the kidney issues the first time around, but he was ever the optimist. Whether it was overcoming whatever the latest his health was throwing at him or whether, with a little wind, he just might coax 300 yards out his next drive.

It’s difficult to write these words. How do you say goodbye to such a great friend? Bruce was one of a kind, true to himself and others, honest and caring above all else. We shared so many things, from walking the golf course when ours were the first steps in the dew to partaking of a Fosters, “lizing”, in the evening. Bruce was an authentic man and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. RIP Ram!

My Man Ram,
How true when someone said not a mean bone in his body. We had many good times and interesting conversations . Bruce certainly marched to his own drummer (probably Ron Woods). I will miss Bruce and his eccentric outlook on life and people. He gave everyone a nickname and mine still is used today.

I'm so grateful that I was able to call BC a friend. He was always full of love and kindness. I can think him for my knowledge and love of Mick Jagger and will always think of our great memories when I hear The Rolling Stones. We had an instant friendship and Bruce will always hold a special place in my heart.

My first memory of Bruce was in High School. We were playing poker with some guy friends. From the start, I recognized his sweet heart. Another favorite memory of Bruce was when my niece (now 33) was a toddler. Bruce was over at our house and my niece kept saying she was "Bruce's girl" when we asked her whose girl she was :) Obviously, he made quite a good impression on her too. My love goes out to all of the Campbell family.

Bruce Campbell was a free spirit and a very unique individual. Generous to a fault and not a mean bone in his body. A true and loyal friend who will be missed greatly by those close to him! I played hundreds of rounds of golf with Bruce and always found a great joy in those times. I will miss you Bruce and I'm sure you will be hitting 300 yard drives in the great beyond! Also beware to any up there to use your turn signal! Goodbye old friend.
