Cleo Davis

PETERSBURG, IL - Cleo Davis, 86, of Petersburg, died on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at St. John's Hospice in Springfield, Ill.

He was born Aug. 30, 1927, in Liberty Ky., the son of Wade and Carrie (Barnett) Davis.

Cleo is survived by his wife of 68 years, Catherine; his children: Rodney (Debbie) Davis of Petersburg, Joyce Davis of Springfield, Janice (Charles) McLaughlin of Chatham, Anita Davis of Petersburg and Royce (Debbie) Davis of Tallula; brother, Clifford (Mari Lou) Davis of Cincinnati Ohio; sisters, Jewel Tedder of Tallula and Jean Williams of Liberty, Ky.; 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons: Boyd "Don" Davis, Larry M. Davis and Roger L. Davis; grandsons, Larry Michael and Cleo Matthew Davis; brothers, Merle Davis and Charles W. "Cracker" Davis; and sister, Lina Mae Smith.

Cleo was a Veteran of WWII, proudly serving in the U.S. Army. He served as City of Petersburg Water Superintendent until his retirement in 1994.

He was an avid Chicago White Sox Fan, served as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church in Petersburg for many years and was an avid gardener. He was a loyal husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 23 at First Baptist Church in Petersburg, the Rev. Rob Gallion officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorials may be directed to: First Baptist Church in Petersburg or St. John's Hospice.
