Darrell McAfee
ROSAMOND - Darrell McAfee, 87, of Rosamond, died Thursday, October 20, 2011 in Decatur Memorial Hospital. He was born May 30, 1924 on the family farm in Rosamond in Christian County, IL, the son of Ray & Ethel A. (Brown) McAfee. Darrell was a graduate of Rosamond High School, Class of 1942. He was a Navy veteran of WWII, Storekeeper 2nd Class, and spent 19 months at sea. He lived his entire life in the Rosamond area, except when he was in the service. Darrell was a retired dairy, beef, and grain farmer in rural Rosamond. He was also a longtime insurance agent. He also sold dairy and livestock equipment. He served on the board of directors for Assumption Mutual Insurance Company, Rosamond Coop Grain, and Prairie Farms Dairy. Darrell was also a member of Community Presbyterian Church of Rosamond; Pana VFW; Nokomis American Legion; Pana Lions Club; member & past president of Pana Rotary Club; Illini Quarterback Club; and past board member of BRS Baseball Museum, Nokomis. He was an ardent fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Fighting Illini, and local high school sports.
He married Avo Hancock. They had four children and later divorced. He then married Verna Fesser in 1975. She preceded him in death on October 21, 1991. Darrell married Roberta Durbin Hopwood on November 14, 1994. She survives in Rosamond, along with sons: Delmar (Kris) McAfee, Steamboat Springs, CO & Dwain (Rhonda) McAfee, Pana, IL; daughters: Diane (George) Stone, Spalding, IL & Denise (Jim) Downs, Pana, IL; 19 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; step sons: James (Linda) Hopwood, Roeland Park, KS; Rod (Kay) Hopwood, Springfield, IL; step daughter: Ruth (Walter) Hild, Naperville, IL; brother: Robert McAfee, Livermore, CA; and brother-in-law: Merle Wolters, Pana, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Vivian Wilcox & husband Hobert Wilcox and Genevieve Wolters; sister-in-law: Phyllis McAfee; & step son: Lamar Fesser.
Memorials may be made to Community Presbyterian Church, Rosamond; Pana Community Hospital Foundation; or BRS Baseball Museum, Nokomis.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 24, 2011 in McCracken-Dean Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Harold Harmison officiating. Burial will be in Rosemond Grove Cemetery, Rosamond with graveside military rites by Pana Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Sorry to hear of Uncle Darrell's passing. He was always a jovial man with a quick wit. I remember visiting his farm & cousins & swinging our feet in the water tank by the barn. Great memories there in Rosamond. May God Bless Darrell & Family. Love and prayers to All
