Tell ya one more. We picked up mail from what was at the time Champion Federal. The company's biggest account. On occasion they would have a big army bag of financial statements. Hundreds and hundreds, maybe thousands of statements. One night, without realizing, I neglected to put the bag in the van, and instead...that giant bag sat on the sidewalk outside in downtown Bloomington...with all that financial DNA inside.
By some miracle, that bag was still chillin' on the sidewalk outside the bank come morning. The good news. Main guys at the bank found the bag. The bad news. Main guys at the bank found the bag...which I was responsible for.
It could have killed the company. I should have been fired on the spot. Don was my boss. I had no idea this happened until I came into work. Don was waiting. And let me tell you, he was as cool as a cucumber. I guarantee you he got REEMED by that bank and by our bosses. He did not pass it on to me. For whatever reason. I knew I had screwed up big time, but he just let it go - AND - he kept me as the guy to pick up mail from Champion Federal.
Makes me laugh today, but I'll never forget it. Don, I owe you a BIG one, buddy.

Hi there. I worked with Don for 2-3 years while I was a student at ISU. We worked for United Mailing Services for probably a whopping 5 bucks an hour and he later became my boss, as he was a few yrs older than me. Man, we had so much fun!! Some things I could mention and some things I couldn't!! It was a very time sensitive business, so you had to be on cue but Don made it an easy environment. Sometimes I drove a work van picking up mail and I'll bet Don spent $30 a week putting oil in that thing, half of which I don't think he was ever reimbursed for. As I was without vehicle, he gave me a ton of rides back to campus and he never asked for anything in return. We had our little cat fights but my oh my he really was a great friend and I've thought of him OFTEN over the years. When I left the job, Don wrote me the nicest personal note, from the heart, and somewhere I've still got that thing.
I ran into him probably 10 or 20 years ago and I could tell he had gone through a bit of a personal transformation. He just seemed lighter and more at ease with life. I've thought of him often over the years, and I'm disappointed in myself for not looking him up in recent times. Once again, I'm reminded that life...is short.
I'll leave you with this. When I think about Don, I can't help but smile and laugh. It's an automatic response. Thank you, Don, for making a difference in my life. I'll pass it on, brother. God bless you Greenslate family. Always.

So sad for this to happen. You had survived all the ordeals of the cancer and transplant, which meant you had your life to live finally as you wished. Only God had other ideas for you. You will be missed by your children, family, and all those who loved you. Peace to your family and happiness knowing you have gone home!
