Ernest E. Dodson, Jr. 1932 - 2018
Springfield, IL—Ernest E. Dodson, Jr., 85, of Springfield, died at 1:42 PM, Friday, March 2, 2018 at his home. He was born on April 2, 1932 in Springfield to Ernest E. and Agnes (Miller) Dodson, Sr. He married Donna Hamrick on May 31, 1952 and she preceded him in death on April 24, 2015.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, and half-sister, Patricia Dulaney.
Survivors include three daughters, Deborah Dodson of Midway, GA, Susan Dodson of Springfield, and Judi (Ted) Anderson of Midway, GA; one son, David (Michele) Dodson of Springfield; four grandchildren, Brittany (James) Slattery of Richmond Hill, GA, Claire Dodson of Springfield, LCpl Michael Dodson of Okinawa, Japan, and Stephen (Tracy) Anderson of Wilson, NC; two great-grandchildren, Liam Slattery and Ben Anderson; one half-sister, Sherry (Dennis) Suiter of Lamar, MO; and several nieces and nephews.
Ernest was a United States Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War Era.
Ernest was a life-long Springfield resident. He was employed as a Springfield Police Officer and retired as the Deputy Chief of Police after 25 years of service. He also served as Chief of the Springfield Park District Police and retired after 10 years of service. He then worked as a door keeper at the Illinois State Senate.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church as well as PB PA Unit 5, Illinois Police Association, Illinois Chiefs of Police Association, and FBI National Academy Associates.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and was an avid Cardinals Fan.
Visitation: 4-7 PM, Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at Staab Funeral Home-Springfield with a prayer service being held at 4 PM.
Funeral Mass: 10:30 AM, Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at St. Joseph Church in Springfield with Reverend Manuel Cuizon & Deacon Larry Day officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery where military honors will be conducted.
Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Home.
